Britain’s Prince Harry really wants to return to his birthplace, at least part time. But he’s not about to do so until he’s sure he and his family will be safe.

As he prepares to return to London soon, his U.K. police protection is anything but assured. Though some outlets are reporting that his security is “nailed on,” that view is actually premature.

Later this month, the prince is due back in London for a High Court trial against Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail and the Mail on Sunday. Scheduled to begin on January 19, Harry’s case focuses on alleged breaches of privacy. However, the publisher has denied the Duke of Sussex’s claims as being “lurid” and “simply preposterous.”

Meanwhile, RadarOnline is reporting that a new risk factor could force the issue of Harry’s security being reinstated. However, government sources say that the assessment of Harry’s security needs is still in progress. No final decision has been made.

Following Harry and wife Meghan Markle’s step back from royal duties in 2020, the Home Office withdrew his security protection. Since then, Harry has fought to have it reinstated, not just for his safety, but for that of his family. Harry and Meghan share two children: Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4.

Even though Harry invoked the death of his mother Princess Diana, he lost his legal challenge in May 2025. “Some people want history to repeat itself,” he told the BBC at the time, which he said was “pretty dark.”

In the meantime, an insider reported, “No-one can say what the RMB [Risk Management Board] will ultimately advise … because the review is still underway and there is simply no conclusion yet.”

“Suggestions that the outcome is already settled look like an effort to shape the media narrative,” the source added. “This is the one huge reason this is far from a done deal for Harry.”
