Taye Diggs’ latest accolade hits close to home.

On Monday, the Rochester Music Hall of Fame announced that Diggs will be inducted into its Class of 2026.

“Taye Diggs exemplifies the spirit of Rochester’s creative community,” board member Tony Gross said in a statement. “His achievements reflect not only extraordinary talent, but a commitment to artistic excellence, representation, and storytelling that continues to inspire audiences worldwide.”

The “Rent” star and local band The Skycoasters are the first two inductees to be announced for the upcoming ceremony in April.

Diggs, who was born in New Jersey, grew up in Rochester and attended the School of the Arts (SOTA). In 1993, he graduated from Syracuse University with a BFA in musical theater before launching his prolific Broadway and television career.

In addition to his role as Benny in “Rent,” Diggs’ stage credits include “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” “Chicago,” “Wicked,” and “Moulin Rouge!” On the small screen, he’s appeared in “All American,” “Private Practice,” and “Empire.”

Meanwhile, his film career includes roles in “River Runs Red,” “’Til Death Do Us Part, “and ”Opening Night,” as well as the film adaptations of “Rent” and “Chicago.”

In response to the news, Diggs shared his gratitude. “I’m incredibly grateful and humbled to be recognized by my hometown. Rochester played a huge role in shaping who I am as an artist, and this honor means more to me than I can express,” read a statement from him on the Hall of Fame’s website.

Last Thursday, Diggs also showcased his Rochester pride by sharing a photo of his old Rochester City School District ID on Instagram. The ID featured a baby-faced Diggs in glasses and listed his family’s former Rochester address. “Back in the day,” Diggs wrote in the caption.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for April 26 at 7 p.m. at the Eastman Theatre.
