Whether you’re a first-time home builder or a seasoned developer, construction is a significant investment involving multiple stakeholders. Stakeholders range from architects to the experts in the field who are key to ensuring each building stands strong and resilient, making it safe and secure in compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC).

On Jan. 18, 2024, Virginia adopted the 2021 Uniform Statewide Building Code which brought some new requirements. To assist with the upcoming Jan. 18, 2025 mandatory compliance deadline, the Prince William County Department of Development Services’ team of experts compiled a Top Ten List of significant changes to both commercial and residential building codes, which can be found here.

“Navigating construction and building codes relies on trusted sources that are dedicated to upholding safety for the well-being of the entire community, each and every day,” said Mandi, Spina, Director, Department of Development Services. “For homeowners, builders, and investors alike, we encourage familiarity with the code’s requirements by consulting with a member of our team.”

Adhering to the highest standards of construction is paramount, which is why the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code continually adapts. Every three years the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code is released as new minimum safety requirements for buildings and structures evolve. These requirements must be complied with when constructing a new building, structure or addition to an existing building.

Building permit applicants can use the 2018 VUSBC until Jan. 17, 2025. After that date, all new building permit applications and construction must meet the 2021 VUSBC requirements.
