Prolific Letterboxd user Charli XCX is so into cinema right now. She’s starring in fantasy dramas, she’s recording soundtracks, and she’s watching every single movie in the world. Or at least that’s what she claims in a new promotional video for her upcoming A24-produced mockumentary, The Moment. In the video, the star claims she made the film because she’d already “watched all the films.” Now, she can just force her director, Aidan Zamiri, to change little bits of it, then watch it again.
The promo shows Charli going full Chalamode, by which we mean playing a parody of herself in harebrained marketing schemes. Down a conspiracy well, this version of Charli assumes every movie in the world is just a promo for The Moment. “Pillion: produced by A24, starring Alexander Skarsgård, who’s obviously starring in my movie,” she explains. “Alex! I can’t believe you shot an entire movie just as a way of building excitement around The Moment! And of course, it’s gay, and everybody knows I love that stuff.” Except when the gays make her sign insane products. Don’t do that.
The list of movies related to The Moment grows very long and includes Dune (“a play on the iconic four-letter title Brat”) and Weapons (“a movie about a stylish woman with a lot of influence over her dedicated fan base of young people and at least two gay guys”). The only exception is Zootopia 2. “I think that might just be a thing of it’s own,” Charli theorizes, “which is great.” Check to see if you can find the connection when The Moment hits theaters January 30.
