The Royal Family has cut short its return to Spain to travel to Córdoba following the train accident in Adamuz, which on Sunday left at least 39 dead and around 100 injured. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia expressed their " dismay and concern " over the tragedy and conveyed their support to the victims: " I understand the families' despair ."

This is what the King said from Athens, where he is with Queen Letizia and their daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, for the funeral of Princess Irene, the monarch's aunt and sister of Queen Sofía, who died last Thursday. The King and Queen have canceled the rest of their engagements in Greece to return to Spain "as soon as possible" and prepare for a visit to the site of the accident: "We are going back and plan to make some kind of appearance in the area."

The King and Queen also expressed their gratitude for the "tireless" work of the emergency services on the ground in the rescue and investigation efforts. In this context, they took the opportunity to acknowledge the cooperation of local residents: " We know that they have assisted, as much as possible and on the spot, all those affected by the horrific accident."

The King and Queen reduce their schedule in Greece due to the accident

Felipe VI has been kept informed at all times since the accident occurred, and has remained in contact with national and regional authorities: "We have been in communication with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez and with the President of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno since last night," he explained.
