According to a source, Buckingham Palace places small televisions on the balcony where the royal family waves to the crowds. “They are placed in the corners of the balcony, slightly canted. The balustrade is covered in red fabric, so all the equipment can be hidden behind it,” the insider told Daily Express.

Every summer, the royal family stands on the balcony to watch the annual Trooping of the Colour, an event that marks the reigning monarch’s birthday. The relatives also use the awning during jubilees, Victory in Europe Day, weddings and coronations.

One family member who likely loved the television placement was Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. According to commentator Richard Kay, the former Duke of York’s top priority after being stripped of his titles and evicted from Royal Lodge is installing the entertainment device in his new Marsh Farm home. “Workmen were there putting in a satellite dish for him. We know he loves his TV,” he said during an appearance on the “Palace Confidential” podcast.

As life continues to change for Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, television may be a comfort. “I think it all harks back to his military days,” Richard Kay said. “He spent hours watching planes descending and taking off from Heathrow Airport on some interactive system that he had at Royal Lodge, and I’m sure that will be replicated at Marsh Farm.”
