The Library of Congress on Wednesday revealed 25 films it is adding to its National Film Registry, movies that span the silent film era as far back as 1896 to Wes Anderson’s 2014 nine-time Oscar-nominated The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Other films to make the cut for the registry, which chooses films annually for their cultural, historic or aesthetic importance to the nation’s film heritage, include Christopher Nolan’s Inception, the Civil War drama Glory, the original The Karate Kid, Pixar’s The Incredibles, Amy Heckerling’s Clueless, and a pair of musicals in 1954’s White Christmas and 1956’s High Society.
The list also included the Tom Hanks-starring AIDS drama Philadelphia, Peter Weir’s The Truman Show, Richard Linklater’s 1995 romantic trilogy starter Before Sunrise, the Salma Hayek-starring biopic Frida and John Carpenter’s 1982 cult sci-i horror film The Thing which the library said received the most nomination votes by the public.
Four documentaries were also selected: Ken Burns’ Brooklyn Bridge, Nancy Buirski’s The Loving Story, George Nierenberg’s Say Amen, Somebody and Danny Tedesco’s The Wrecking Crew.
The latest class bring the total number of titles in the registry to 925, with some among the 2 million moving image collection items held in the Library of Congress. Others are preserved in coordination with copyright holders or other film archives, the library says.
“When we preserve films, we preserve American culture for generations to come. These selections for the National Film Registry show us that films are instrumental in capturing important parts of our nation’s story,” Acting Librarian of Congress Robert R. Newlen said in a release today. “We are proud to continue this important work, adding a broad range of 25 films to the National Film Registry as a collective effort in the film community to protect our cinematic heritage.”
