On Friday, a week after thousands of Minnesota businesses closed to demand an end to ICE sweeps across the state, several groups (including National Shutdown and General Strike U.S.) are planning to take the strike nationwide. And, as more and more celebrities speak out against the violence in the Twin Cities and beyond, a handful of them are also urging fans to take part in the proposed national strike by opting out of work, school, and shopping.
“We believe it is time for a mass mobilization of working-class people across this country — not only to demand better wages and safer workplaces, but to build a new system rooted in justice, care, and collective power,” General Strike wrote on its website. “A general strike is how we say: you cannot run this country without us.”
Come Friday, here’s who we can expect to see on the streets (or, at the very least, posting about them).
“Truth is a line of demarcation between a democratic government and authoritarian regime,” Pascal wrote in the caption of one of six recent anti-ICE posts, quoting a recent New York Times article while promoting the strike. “Mr Pretti and Rene [sic] Good are dead. The American people deserve to know what happened.”

The singer and Wicked actress reposted information about the national shutdown on her Instagram Story Thursday, encouraging her followers to opt out of shopping or working the following day.
“Withholding our labor and capital is our most effective leverage,” the Hacks actress wrote alongside an infographic from General Strike. “national general strike spread the word!”
The singer, who’s been consistently outspoken about ICE’s reign of terror, shared Einbinder’s post about the national shutdown to her Instagram Story Wednesday.
“GENERAL STRIKE THIS FRIDAY JAN. 30TH in solidarity w Minneapolis & everyone else being terrorized right now,” Harrison wrote in a caption accompanying a selfie video spreading the word about the strike.
On Wednesday, the comedian shared a graphic with the message “ICE OUT EVERYWHERE!!!” promoting Friday’s shutdown. “Minnesotans need our help,” she wrote in the caption. “Let’s show them they’re not in this alone.”
The actress posted a sketch honoring Pretti and Good, along with the slogan, “Pretti Good reason for a national strike.” “THESE WERE AMERICANS! SHOT BY OUR GOVERNMENT!” she wrote, tagging People for the American Way and ACLU.
“What they’re doing in Minnesota with the strike needs to expand,” Norton told the Los Angeles Times while promoting Olivia Wilde’s The Invite at Sundance. “We should be talking about a national general economic strike until this is over.”
