Unless you’re associated with the Royal Family, you’re probably not going to spend the night at Windsor Castle. But you could snap up a home right next door.
Church Lodge, the only freehold house available in the Royal Mews next to the famous castle in Berkshire, England, just hit the market. Built in the mid-1700s, the Georgian abode was owned for centuries by the castle and the neighboring St. John the Baptist Church. At one point, the property was gifted to Lord Samuel Buchanan, the godson of Queen Elizabeth. Buchanan was a friend and ski partner of Princess Diana’s and served as a confidant to Princes Harry and William. The two boys visited the 18th-century pad while they were at the nearby Eton College. Other notable names to have visited include singer and actor Cliff Richard and TV presenter Gloria Hunniford.

The bright-blue kitchen, redone in 2024, is outfitted with German appliances.

In more recent years, Church Lodge has come to be owned privately. The current owners have updated the home with contemporary flourishes and technology while preserving period features, like the fireplaces. It’s now on the market for $2.4 million with AZ Real Estate. “This is an exceptional and unique home that blends tasteful renovation with historic charm, in a picture-perfect iconic location,” Alisa Zotimova, the CEO of the brokerage, said in a statement.

The 1,800-square-foot home spans three levels: On the ground floor, there’s a bespoke blue kitchen outfitted with German appliances and a tap system that delivers filtered chilled, still, and sparkling water. From here, you can access the dining room, where a wine cellar sits under the stairs and double doors open to the courtyard garden. From the fireplace-warmed sitting room, you can see Windsor Castle and the Royal Mews. Also on this level is a study that can be turned into a bedroom if so desired.

The dining room spills open to a small patio where you can enjoy the evening air.

Upstairs, you’ll find three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The primary suite has bespoke fitted wardrobes and a private balcony that overlooks the church gardens and the castle’s Round Tower. Below ground, meanwhile, there’s a cozy media room with a fireplace. In Church Lodge’s past life, this underground space was a basement that had a tunnel leading into Windsor Castle. That feature has since been covered over with concrete, so don’t get any funny ideas about sneaking into the palace after hours.
