Jeremy Clarkson has seen his first racehorse demonstrate genuine winning ability after securing a maiden victory on Friday.

The former Top Gear host leads the syndicate behind The Hawkstonian. That horse is named in honour of the Hawkstone Brewery, which produces beer using ingredients from Clarkson’s Farm.

The grey gelding is under the care of trainer Ben Pauling, with the syndicate overseen by Old Gold Racing. Pauling’s relatives previously farmed the land that is now Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm and mentored Kaleb (Cooper from Clarkson’s Farm) in agricultural skills.

The Hawkstonian had his first outing in November 2024, placing sixth at Uttoxeter in a National Hunt Flat Race. Two further appearances in bumpers followed, with his maiden placed finish coming on his third attempt at Ffos Las last February.

The grey progressed to hurdles this campaign. It claimed third at Sedgefield in November and fifth at Huntingdon in December.

The Hawkstonian started at 15-2 when returning to Ffos Las for a 2m novices’ hurdle on Friday. Under jockey Ben Jones, he tracked the pace-setters before hitting the front three flights from home and battled on to hold off a determined late rally from Emerald Breeze, prevailing by three-quarters of a length.

A substantial contingent of syndicate members, who each initially invested £60 for their stake in the 3,250 available shares, attended the west Wales venue to witness the triumph.

Whilst Clarkson wasn’t present, he marked the success on his X account by sharing race footage. Old Gold Racing shared a clip from At The Races of the closing stages.

They also “added a little bit of Jeremy Clarkson magic”. That meant overlaying audio of him repeatedly saying the phrase “speed and power” during his days on Top Gear.

He stated: “Hawkstonians. I’m receiving word that our horse triumphed today at the Blue Ditch course in Wales.

“I’m going to celebrate with a beer.” A user on X replied: “But Jezza, it’s still dry January?” Clarkson replied: “Not when you have a brewery and a pub, it isn’t.”

Old Gold Racing’s Chief Executive Officer, Ed Seyfried, also marked the win. He said: “Standing in the wet and the mud at Ffos Las was all worth it in the end!

“Seeing The Hawkstonian get his first win is great for Jeremy and the shareholders, and we look forward to more fun days ahead. I’m sure Jeremy will be watching the replay back with a pint or two of Hawkstonian tonight.”
