Emails released by the US department of justice as part of its investigations into convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein claim the former Duke of York, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor after being stripped of his titles, had significant exposure to senior Chinese officials.
The latest revelations raise further questions over whether his relationship with the Chinese state at the highest levels posed a national security risk.
According to an email Epstein sent in November 2015 to Reid Hoffman, the billionaire investor and co-founder of LinkedIn, Andrew enjoyed a close rapport with Mr Xi.
Epstein told Mr Hoffman: “Prince andrew is off to china , he spent a great deal of time with Xi.”
In an apparent offer to broker a meeting between Mr Hoffman and the former prince, Epstein adds, “if you would like to meet up, . let me know”.
The correspondence is among more than three million Epstein-related files that the department of justice published on Friday.
In an earlier email to Jes Staley, the American banker and former chief executive of Barclays, Epstein appeared to suggest that Mountbatten-Windsor was keen to represent the wealth management firm JP Morgan Cazenove in China.
He wrote in September 2010: “Prince Andrew would like much more to represent casanov [sic] in china than tim collins [an American financier].”
The former prince is known to have held formal meetings with Mr Xi in Beijing on at least two occasions, in April 2016 and May 2018.
