The Loose Women panellists are rarely short of something to say, but they all found themselves stunned into silence by the revelation of an unexpected wedding on Monday (February 2).

Janet Street-Porter shared on Monday lunchtime that she had wed her long-standing partner Peter Spanton. The renowned broadcaster, 79, who has been married four times previously, sent a video message to her Loose Women colleagues on Monday to announce that she had finally walked down the aisle.

In the clip, Janet appeared alongside her new husband and their dog Badger as she declared: “Hi everyone, I’ve been keeping a big secret. It’s my big news for everyone. Peter and me, and Badger, got married on Saturday, so there you are.

“I finally did it. I waited to the last for the best. See ya!” The Loose Women panel, comprising Kaye Adams, Sue Cleaver, Brenda Edwards and Nadia Sawalha, all burst into applause with joy whilst viewing the video footage. A photograph from the wedding day, secured by The Mirror, showed that Janet had chosen to break with convention by avoiding a white gown.

Janet, who was born Janet Bull, was formerly wed to Tim Street-Porter between 1967–1974 and retained his surname after launching her media career, though she has confessed to numerous infidelities during this period. The presenter subsequently married Tony Elliott, the Time Out publisher, before their relationship ended two years later, reports the Mirror.

Admitting she recognised immediately that she had made an error, Janet revealed: “I turned to him and said ‘well that was a mistake,’ within 24 hours [of marrying] and he said ‘I agree’.

“I said ‘we were such great friends, exactly the same age, why on earth did we get married! ?”.

Janet was subsequently wed to filmmaker Frank Cvitanovich from 1979 to 1981. In 1997 she tied the knot with David Sorkin in Las Vegas, later characterising this as a “mistake” and a “mid-life crisis”.

They parted ways two years afterwards in 1999. She admitted: “I thought ‘I don’t know why I’m saying the words ‘I do’ but I’m just saying I do’ then I was back in the hotel and I was like, ‘ugh’.”

During an interview with The Guardian, Janet offered a candid glimpse into her romantic history, remarking: “I’ve been married four times and lived with a lot of blokes – I know how men’s minds work.

“What have all the men I’ve been with got in common? They’re all pathetically grateful.”

Janet previously disclosed on Loose Women that she has retained all of her wedding and engagement rings, though has donated some of her gowns.

In 2019, she shared: “I’ve sold two of my wedding dresses – the fourth wedding dress I gave to Paul O’Grady as an outfit for Lily Savage, and he wore it!” Janet began a relationship with Peter, a former restaurateur and businessman nearly 30 years ago but has generally maintained their partnership away from the spotlight.

The former newspaper editor doesn’t have any children, and previously acknowledged in an article for The Independent that this is not something she has grown to regret. At the time, she said: “I don’t miss having kids. Men are far more demanding – especially creative, imaginative men who live in their own heads. I have certainly enjoyed the dramas and the delights of their company, and I wouldn’t swap a smart man for a toddler or a goldfish.”
