After navigating the apocalypse in Greenland 2: Migration, and reprising his role as Stoick in Universal’s live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, Gerard Butler is ready to complete a sweep of a New York City building to rescue a group of captives in Empire City. Today, we’ve got a first-look image of Butler going from floor to floor while searching for survivors as his situation goes from bad to worse in his forthcoming action-thriller.
What’s Empire City about?
In Empire City, “when a hostage crisis erupts inside New York’s landmark Clybourn Building, former Navy SEAL turned firefighter Rhett (Gerard Butler), his squad, and his NYPD wife Dani (Hayley Atwell) must fight and navigate their way through the building to rescue the captives. Omari Hardwick also stars as Hawkins, the film’s villain.”

In addition to Butler, Atwell, and Hardwick, Mel Jarnson (Mortal Kombat, Killer Whale), Tre Hale (Platonic, Love and Monsters), Michael Beach (Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King), Dominic Bogart (American Primeval, The Birth of a Nation), Stephen Murphy (The Odyssey, Doom Patrol), Jack DiFalco (Daredevil) and Kaiwi Lyman (Den of Thieves, Trigger Warning).
Where do we know Michael Matthews from?
Michael Matthews directs Empire City from a script by Brian Tucker and S. Craig Zahler, with Marc Butan, Gerard Butler, Alan Siegel, and Paul Currie serving as producers. Matthews directed 2020’s Love and Monsters, a dystopian sci-fi action comedy about Joel, who, seven years after he survives a monster apocalypse, leaves his cozy underground bunker behind on a quest to reunite with his high school sweetheart. Love and Monsters, starring Dylan O’Brien, Jessica Henwick, Michael Rooker, and Ariana Greenblatt, is a lot of fun, and the creature designs are creepy, crawly, and massive.
What else is Gerard Butler up to?
As for Gerard Butler, he’s currently filming How to Train Your Dragon 2 for Universal. In addition to Butler reprising his role as Stoick, the live-action sequel directed by Dean DeBlois stars Mason Thames, Cate Blanchett, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Nico Parker, Phil Dunster, Bronwyn James, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, and Harry Trevaldwyn. The film follows the adventures of Hiccup (Thames), a Viking who befriends dragons, the flying creatures, while finding and bonding with Valka (Blancett), his long-lost warrior mother, as they continue their journey.
Are you excited about Gerard Butler’s Empire City? I enjoy Butler in just about anything, and when you add Haley Atwell to the mix, I am so down. Love and Monsters was a lot of fun, and I would be curious to see how Matthews’ talents as a director transfer from apocalyptic vistas to an NYC building overwhelmed by villains and danger. Let’s do it.
