If David Thewlis could wave a wand, he’d cast a spell to make everyone stop asking if he would consider returning to the Harry Potter franchise.
The actor, who starred as Remus Lupin across most of the magical movie adaptations, said in a new interview that he’s “sick of talking about” a potential return, either in the upcoming HBO TV show or any other version. (Notably, Thewlis did not take part in HBO Max’s 2022 reunion special Return to Hogwarts.)
“I feel like I’d be far too old to play my original character, and, no, I wouldn’t want to go back into it,” Thewlis told ScreenTime, before adding with a laugh, “I’ve had quite enough of that. I’m sick of talking about it, quite honestly.”

However, Thewlis — who will next be seen in The Artful Dodger season 2 (premiering Tuesday on Disney+) — did clarify that he still enjoys speaking with younger fans about his time playing the beloved werewolf character.
“It is nice because with Harry Potter, it’s kids,” Thewlis said. “And kids get very kind of impressed and very overawed, and it’s very nice to make kids happy.”
Thewlis first debuted in the Harry Potter movies in 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, as Professor Remus Lupin, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor who has a secret past with Harry’s (Daniel Radcliffe) dead parents. After skipping the fourth movie, he returned for the rest of the films in the franchise: 2007’s Order of the Phoenix, 2009’s Half-Blood Prince, and the two-part Deathly Hallows movies in 2010 and 2011.
The Harry Potter story is currently being retold in two different mediums: Audible’s audiobooks and HBO’s upcoming TV show.

Game of Thrones alum Iwan Rheon voices Remus Lupin in Audible’s new full-cast audio production of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (released Jan. 13).
Meanwhile the role has yet to be cast in HBO’s TV adaptation, which is currently in production on the first season, since the character of Lupin doesn’t appear until the third book. The show is adapting one of author J.K. Rowling’s books per season, so Lupin won’t debut until season 3.
HBO’s Harry Potter is slated to premiere in 2027.
