The A.V. Club is seeking an experienced Film Critic to join our team of trenchant writers and editors. This role is ideal for a culture journalist with a strong point of view and purposeful ideas about expanding coverage in a way that aligns with A.V. Club voice and its readership, who is always seeking to push forward the pop culture conversation.
The successful candidate has experience writing astute film analysis in the form of reviews, observational pieces, responsive essays, and long-form features. You can develop and execute original ideas that drive new cultural conversations on everything from auteur passion projects to summer tentpoles. You understand that curiosity is just as important as expertise, and you’re eager to help expand our audience’s understanding of the films of the present and past. You have a knack for homing in on the overlooked elements of the biggest pop culture stories of the moment, but can zoom out to take the bird’s-eye view of more expansive topics, like the state of the film industry. You know that truly appreciating movies means taking a warts-and-all approach—assessing their strengths and flaws, and never mindlessly cheerleading.
