The internet went wild last week when a report came out that the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie would feature Jack Sparrow’s son as the lead alongside Margot Robbie. Well, franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer has chimed in.
While speaking with Entertainment Tonight for F1’s Oscar nomination, Bruckheimer shared that they are still ways away from the next Pirates movie. When asked about the recent report that has been circulating, Bruckheimer was mum but did let the outlet know that only half the report is correct.
Reporter: So maybe the Margot Robbie part and not Jack Sparrow’s son. Bruckheimer: I think you’re going up the right road.
It should be noted, things like this happen all the time, a rumor comes out and all of sudden the studios and creatives are quick to dismiss it to keep their projects as under wraps as possible, so is Bruckheimer being 100%? Who knows, we have to wait and see (likely at Disney’s D23 Expo this Summer).
Additionally, Bruckheimer has remained adamant that his plans are to get Johnny Depp back into the franchise but as of now, no official negotiations or deals have been made and at this point, they do not even have a director attached. This project is so far away from any sort of production that Bruckheimer even admitted that Top Gun 3 is further along in development.
I should also note the initial report came from industry insider Jeff Sneider, who has a great track record when it comes to reporting on Walt Disney Studios projects.
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which consists of five movies, has grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide. It is the 17th-highest-grossing film series of all time, and is the first film franchise to produce two or more films that grossed over $1 billion.
