After earning more than $633 million worldwide, Joseph Kosinski’s F1 has become a major win for Apple, and with numbers like that, a sequel was almost inevitable. Rumblings of a follow-up have circulated since the film’s release last summer, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer has now confirmed what many expected: it’s happening.

F1 Sequel

“We’re working on a sequel,” Bruckheimer told the BBC at the annual Academy Awards luncheon in Los Angeles. That’s about all he was willing to reveal, declining to share a production timeline or confirm casting details, including whether Brad Pitt will return as Sonny Hayes, which still seems like a safe assumption.

F1 also earned several Oscar nominations last month, including a nod for Best Picture. Bruckheimer said he was “surprised” but thrilled by the recognition. “It was a long journey to get the movie made because we had to endure a couple of strikes – but in the end, the movie entertained audiences around the world,” he said. “I never worked with Brad Pitt before and it’s really a thrill to work with Brad.“

Brad Pitt Seems Keen to Return

Shortly after the film’s release, Pitt indicated he would like to return for a sequel, though he wasn’t sure how his character would fit in. “I would want to drive again, selfishly speaking,” Pitt said. “F1 is still the focus. It needs to be on Joshua Pierce – Damson Idris’s character – and the rest of the team fighting for a championship. Where does Sonny fit in? I’m not sure. Sonny’s probably out on the Bonneville Salt Flats, setting speed records or something like that. So I’m not sure beyond that, just yet.“

We Loved F1

Our own Chris Bumbray loved F1, saying the film “might rank as one of the most awe-inspiring works of pure spectacle seen on the big screen in years.” He continued, “While some may thumb their nose at the fact that it’s deliberately telling a familiar story, it can’t be denied that F1 is an absolute rollercoaster ride of a movie, and – like Sinners – helps make the case for theatres still being essential to a particular kind of filmmaking. Hopefully, this is the blockbuster hit it deserves to be.“

What do you hope to see in the F1 sequel?
