Veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan has publicly stepped in to support actor Rajpal Yadav, who is currently incarcerated in Tihar Jail in connection with a long-running Rs 9 crores cheque bounce case. In a conversation with Mid-Day, Priyadarshan revealed that he has asked the producers of his next film to increase Yadav’s remuneration in light of the actor’s financial and legal difficulties.

The director, whose forthcoming project starring Pankaj Tripathi and Yadav is being produced with Jubilee Films, said the makers have agreed to pay Yadav more than his usual fee. “I have known Rajpal for over 20 years,” Priyadarshan said. “I saw him for the first time in Jungle [2000] and was surprised by his performance. My first film with him was Malamaal Weekly [2006], and after that, he has starred in most of my films. I told the producers … to pay Rajpal more than what he charges because of his situation. We want to save him. The producers have agreed. Rajpal plays the villain in my movie.”

Priyadarshan also acknowledged being aware of Yadav’s prolonged financial distress, which stems from a loan the actor took in 2010 to finance his directorial debut Ata Pata Laapata (2012). With that film failing at the box office, the unpaid dues reportedly escalated over the years to nearly Rs 9 crores. On the decision to continue working with him, the director said, “I knew about his problem. That’s why I kept signing Rajpal for every film. I pushed him in ad films too. The poor guy made a blunder because of his poor education. Rajpal is a good soul.”

Yadav surrendered to authorities earlier this month after a Delhi High Court bench declined to grant further time in the age-old case and directed him to serve a sentence for dishonouring cheques under the Negotiable Instruments Act. According to his legal team, he has already paid around Rs 2.5 crores toward the disputed amount, with further hearings scheduled as proceedings continue.
