He said writer Denis O’Neill had wanted “footballers doing the football” and he had had the “very good fortune” to take part alongside some famous names including Duvall.

“Michael Keaton was there, Brian Cox and a very young Cole Hauser who actually at the moment is a huge star who plays Rip in Yellowstone,” he said.

“There were some big, big stars.

“We were very blessed to have taken part and met such a wonderful man as Robert Duvall.”

The film would be premiered in 2000 and released after that to mixed reviews – including for the actor’s Scottish accent.

However, it will be remembered with affection by the thousands of extras, like myself, who turned out to watch Scotland become the backdrop for one of the finest actors of his generation.
