Wahlberg played conflicted hit man Melvin Smiley, while 16‑year‑old Alba scene‑stole as Keiko, the student he’s hired to kidnap and then protect. The film only did modest business in theaters but became a cable favorite and helped both careers: Wahlberg moved on to prestige roles, Alba to Dark Angel and big‑screen leads. For years some fans have assumed they dated, but they’ve only ever described each other as friendly co‑stars.
