Eric Dane passed away at age 53 on Thursday, Feb. 19.

The Euphoria and Grey’s Anatomy actor revealed he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, in April 2025.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world,” his family wrote in a statement to Us Weekly. “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always.”

The statement closed with, “Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

The actor was best known for his roles as McSteamy on Grey’s Anatomy and Cal Jacobs on Euphoria and worked with stars from all walks of life throughout his career in Hollywood. Here are all the celebrities who have paid tribute to the late Eric Dane.

Ashton Kutcher

The actor paid his condolences with a social media post, writing, “The Franklin strip fanatics fantasy football league will miss Mr. Eric Dane. We know you’ll be watching from the booth. Miss you, buddy. Let’s keep fighting the fight to solve ALS.”

Selma Blair

Selma, who is battling MS and worked with Eric on Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane in the 2000s, shared a clip from the show with the caption “I love you. And yours.”

Alyssa Milano

Alyssa Milano posted a photo of Eric, his wife Rebecca Gayheart, and their children, writing, “I can’t stop seeing that spark in Eric’s eye right before he’d say something that would either make you spit out your drink or rethink your entire perspective. He had a razor-sharp sense of humor. He loved the absurdity of things. He loved catching people off guard.”

“And when it came to his daughters and Rebecca, everything in him softened. He carried them with him even in rooms where they weren’t present. You could see it in the way his voice changed when he said their names. A breathtakingly beautiful family,” she added.

Alexander starred alongside Eric in Bad Boys: Ride or Die and shared a photo of the actor on his Instagram Stories, writing, “Ugh this hurts so much. Will miss you Eric and loved our time together. You were a joy to work with.”

Nina, who worked with Eric on the 2022 movie Redeeming Love, posted a touching tribute to her Instagram Stories, calling the actor “warm, generous, prepared, and so passionate about what he did.”

Maria’s publishing imprint is set to publish Eric’s memoir, Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, and she penned a moving message honoring his story on social media.

“I was honored he chose my publishing imprint to publish his memoir. He told me he wanted his family to know how much he loved them, and he wanted to leave them a story they could be proud of. My love goes out to his family, and to all those battling this cruel disease, as well as all those caring for someone battling it,” she wrote, in part, before she concluded, “Godspeed, Eric. It was an honor to know you, and we will honor your story.”

Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes paid tribute to Eric with a series of Instagram Stories and an in-feed post, writing, in part, “We are grateful for the artistry, spirit, friendship and humanity he shared with us for so many years. Our hearts are with his family, loved ones, and all who were touched by his work.”

“I just woke up this morning and it was very sad to read the news. It’s hard to put into words. I feel really so sad for his children,” Patrick said on the February 20 airing of Virgin Radio U.K.’s The Chris Evans Breakfast Show. “I was corresponding with him, we were texting so I spoke to him about a week ago and some friends of ours went in to see him and he was really starting to lose his ability to speak. He was bedridden and it was very hard for him to swallow so the quality of his life was deteriorating so rapidly.”

He continued, “He was the funniest man. He was such a joy to work with and I want to just remember him in that spirit because any time he was on set, he brought so much fun to it. He had a great sense of humor. He was easy to work with. We got along instantly. First scene was him, you know, in all his glory, coming out of the bathroom with the towel on, looking amazing, making you feel completely out of shape and insignificant.”

Kim, who also worked with Eric on Grey’s, wrote, “Eric was a light. You’d see it effortlessly shine from him on the set of Grey’s as well as when he was with Rebecca and the girls.”

“What I will remember most about Eric Dane are his hugs,” she wrote, in part. “The best hugs. Oh my friend. I wish you peace.”
