An island that had been given Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s moniker, will be renamed in light of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.

The news comes after Thames Valley Police arrested the former Duke of York on his 66th Birthday on 19 February at his home.

According to police, he was taken into custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office, having allegedly shared sensitive information with disgraced financier, Epstein.

After around 11 hours at Aylsham Police Station in Norfolk, he was released, however, he remains under investigation.

In light of his arrest, an island in Canada that was named after him, will get a fresh title.

Prince Andrew Island sits on the Otonabee River, in Ontario, and is just one island of many that have been named after the Royal Family.

However, Sherry Senis, the mayor of Selwyn Township, has revealed that the council made a big decision after learning of this recent news.

She said in a statement: “Selwyn Council has directed staff to explore the formal process required to rename Prince Andrew and Gordonstoun islands that are located in Selwyn Township.”

To do this, the council must submit an application to the Ontario Geographic Naming Board, and the new name will need to be run past the local Ojibwa community, Curve Lake First Nation.

The choice also has local backing, as Emma Harrison, the MP for Peterborough, told The Globe and Mail, she is ‘fully supportive’ of renaming the island.

But this isn’t the only place that wants to separate itself from Andrew’s name.

The Town of Caledon also want to get rid of a street name, known as Prince Andrew Drive.

The town released a statement, explaining it would need to undergo a ‘formal review process’ before considering the change.

The statement reads: “While we are aware of the recent arrest of former Prince Andrew and the concerns it may raise within the community, any reconsideration of a municipal street name would require a formal review process and public feedback.”

St. Catharines also wants rid of a street named after Andrew.

Mayor Mat Siscoe told Global News that he will approach the Council about changing the name of the street that sits near Prince Charles Court and Lake Street.

“St. Catharines councillors and I have been having discussions for some time about whether the court should be renamed,” Siscoe said in a statement.

“Given today’s news of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest, I would say there is no reason to continue discussing.”

In light of Andrew’s police detention, The King released a statement at the time, revealing he had ‘learned with the deepest concern’ of his younger brother’s arrest.

He stated: “I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office.

“What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation.

“Let me state clearly: the law must take its course. As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter.

“Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all. Charles R.”
