Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has made a debut in the world-famous Louvre thanks to a now infamous picture capturing him a taxi, following his arrest last week.

The former Prince was arrested on his 66th birthday on suspicion of misconduct in public office, and released under investigation 11 hours after police flocked to his temporary accommodation in Sandringham. He was seen for a split second on the day of his arrest as he boarded a taxi from the police station – a moment captured in a now infamous picture by one quick-thinking photographer.

An activist group has now plastered that picture on a wall in the Paris gallery, putting the snap up for potentially tens of thousands of people to see.

Members of the group – reportedly TikTok pranksters – were captured on camera hanging up a small version of the photo on a wall in the building, showing the royal slumped over in his car to potentially thousands of people. While the picture has already reached millions of people, an estimated 30,000 people visit the Louvre every day.

They placed the picture alongside a fake artwork caption titling the guerilla exhibition “He’s Sweating Now” in a tongue-in-cheek reference to the former Prince’s famous claim he doesn’t perspire.

The stunt will likely only deepen the embarrassment felt by the Royal Family following Andrew’s arrest last week, which followed sustained revelations about his association with paedophile convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Documents released by the US Department of Justice found he and his associates had continued to contact and work closely with the disgraced financier.

One set of documents captured Epstein’s enlisting of Andrew – then a UK trade envoy – during a bid to meet with Syrian dictator Colonel Gadaffi, who, he claimed had been told, could require his financial assistance.

In other documents, he was pictured kneeling over an unidentified woman on the floor at an undisclosed location and gazing up at the camera. Mountbatten-Windsor’s inclusion in the document do not indicate wrongdoing of any kind, but they have had long-running fallout for the once Duke of York.

The arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office, an accusation that alleges “serious wilful abuse or neglect” of powers while holding a public office role, was swiftly condemned by King Charles III – who had already stripped his brother of his titles.

He wrote in a statement supported by the Prince and Princess of Wales: “I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office. What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.

“In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation. Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.

“As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all. Charles R.”
