Sarah Ferguson is at the centre of renewed royal scrutiny after an expert claimed that specific members of the Royal Family, such as the Duchess of Edinburgh, may feel “betrayed” by her actions. The remarks come during the continued fallout linked to her and her former husband, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s connections to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Andrew Lownie, author of Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, suggested that any sense of hurt may be felt closer to home rather than among the most senior royals. He pointed to Prince Edward’s wife as someone who had publicly shown warmth towards Sarah during recent royal gatherings.

He exclusively told the Express, “I think some people like Sophie may feel betrayed.”

“I think there may be people in the wider Royal Family who didn’t know what was going on who may feel that their sympathies were abused, but that’s what Sarah does. She uses people; everything is transactional,” the author concluded.

His remarks come amid renewed discussion about how the former Duchess has navigated her relationship with the Firm in recent years, particularly after being gradually welcomed back into the fold following a long period out in the cold.

This follows scenes at Windsor last Easter, where Sophie was seen warmly greeting Sarah and placing an arm around her as they walked back towards the castle for lunch, a moment widely interpreted at the time as a clear signal of reconciliation and goodwill.

It was also widely speculated last year that Sarah’s increased visibility around the royals formed part of a broader effort to steady Andrew’s position amid renewed scrutiny linked to Jeffrey Epstein.

She has always taken a hands-on role in raising her daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, and was long known to share a close relationship with Queen Elizabeth II.

After the monarch’s death in 2022, Sarah and Andrew took in her beloved corgis, Sandy and Muick – a move widely viewed as a sign of enduring personal ties despite years spent on the royal sidelines.

However, the former Duchess’s position has long been complex. Following her divorce in 1996, she lost her HRH style and formal role and has since faced recurring scrutiny over finances and associations, including renewed attention after emails linked to Jeffrey Epstein.

More recently, focus shifted to her living arrangements after she and Andrew were required to leave Royal Lodge, with the latest Epstein-related disclosures intensifying attention.

In recent weeks, questions have swirled about her current whereabouts, with speculation ranging from suggestions she was in the French Alps, the Middle East and even Australia with her sister, Jane.

Reports have since suggested she may be spending time in the UAE. Her exact movements have not been publicly disclosed, adding to the sense of uncertainty that often surrounds the York circle.

Meanwhile, Andrew continues to cast a long shadow over discussions following his arrest last week. Eleven hours after he was detained at his home on the Sandringham Estate, he was photographed slumped in the back of a Range Rover as he left Aylsham Police Investigation Centre.

He was later released under investigation and has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
