Last December, Quentin Tarantino randomly dropped that he did not “care for” Paul Dano, Owen Wilson, and Matthew Lillard on a podcast. Because at the end of the day, it’s podcasting that’ll be what will get ya. But unbeknownst to Tarantino, he unleashed the fan armies of Dano and Lillard online, who showered the actors with so much love that it made Lillard feel like he had died and was watching his own wake. “It felt like I had died and was in heaven watching everyone send out their RIP tweets,” he told People. “I mean, it was really being a part of your own wake, sort of sitting there living through all the nice things people say after you die.” George Clooney shared his support for Lillard during his acceptance speech at the AARP Awards, telling the crowd he would be “honored” to work with him.
At the time, Lillard was understandably hurt by Tarantino’s words — he was a fan of his work and later said the whole situation felt like getting “punched in the mouth.” “It hurts your feelings. It fucking sucks. He wouldn’t say that to Tom Cruise,” he shared during a Q&A at a convention in December. “He wouldn’t say that to somebody who’s a top-line actor. I’m very popular in this room, I’m not very popular in Hollywood… It’s humbling, and it hurts.” Thankfully, now Lillard knows he’s popular in Hollywood, too.
