Strictly Come Dancing star Alex Kingston has revealed ‘missed opportunity’ she had on Doctor Who as she provided an update on her BBC sci-fi series’ character.
Alex, who competed on Strictly with professional dancer Johannes Radebe last year, became an international name in the role of Dr Elizabeth Corday in the global hit TV drama ER, which she starred in for eight years, winning a SAG award in the process.
Other television work from Alex over the years includes her BAFTA-nominated performance as Moll Flanders, plus roles in Douglas Is Cancelled, Treason, Gilmore Girls, Boudica, Lost in Austen, Dodger, A Discovery of Witches, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Arrow.

However, Alex is best known for playing River Song on the iconic BBC sci-fi series, a role she has played opposite three Doctors on screen, beginning with David Tennant and ending with Peter Capaldi.
Continuing to play River in audio adventure and novel form, the character known as ‘The Doctor’s Wife’ has not been seen since 2015’s The Husbands of River Song. Fans have not spent a decade calling for her to make a comeback.
Now, Alex has revealed that she really wanted to share the screen with Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor. Broadchurch and Toxic Town actress Jodie played the Thirteenth Doctor from 2018 to 2022 before David returned to the role that made him a household name for a brief period.

Speaking to WhoCulture, Alex said: “Jodie and I have met and we’ve had conversations about this, about how we felt that it was a missed opportunity that they didn’t share an adventure together on BBC television.”
Despite neither of them being involved with the series anymore, Alex has hinted River and Jodie’s Doctor could appear in an ‘adventure storyline’ in the future.
She explained: “And so I’m 100 per cent sure that there’s a writer somewhere who’s already coming up with some sort of adventure storyline that brings the two of us together, because I think it would be absolutely fantastic and I know it’s what the fans would love.”
Another star Alex would like to work with is Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor, who dramatically left the programme last year after just two seasons. Sex Education’s Ncuti was seemingly replaced by former Doctor Who assistant Billie Piper.
Saying it would be iterating to see ‘has the better outfit’ between River and Ncuti’s Doctor, Alex teased there might be ‘too much naughtiness’ if the Fifteenth Doctor and River were to share screen time. She noted: “A lot of fabulousness… that’s for sure!”
Last month, Alex hinted River could make a return to the BBC series during an appearance onDoctor Who YouTube series The Whoniverse Show
“Of course I’m thinking ‘There’s still plenty of time for her to come back’ – how long’s a day on Darillium? [A single night on the planet Darillium lasts for 24 years].
“River could just be inside a computer; she could be a virus, go anywhere, hack into any computer anywhere in the universe, regenerate herself, 3D print herself? It’s endless – so just putting it out there,” she said.
