If you’re looking for something good to watch this weekend, then you’re in luck as several great flicks have been added to streamers such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer. Among this week’s highlights are a “gripping” drama starring newly-minted BAFTA-winner Jessie Buckley.

Also worth watching are a recent acclaimed horror and a classic sci-fi that proved hugely influential on cinema back in the 1960s.

Best movie new to Netflix this week

Abigail: If ballerina vampire horror is your cup of tea (or just horror in general), then this gory 2024 hit will tick all the right boxes.

Featuring a star-studded cast including Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Will Catlett, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, Giancarlo Esposito and Alisha Weir, Abigail follows a group of criminals who kidnap the daughter of a powerful criminal. However, they quickly discover that she has a bloodsucking nature.

Filmhounds called the movie “devilishly disgusting and effortlessly humorous”, and one that “gives us a brand new monster icon to fall in love with”.

The Impossible: Before he became a web-slinging A-lister, Tom Holland stole the scenes as a child actor in this powerful drama about a real-life disaster.

The movie tells the true story of the Bennetts, based on the experiences of María Belón and her family, who are caught in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, as they desperately try to survive.

Also featuring Naomi Watts in an Oscar-nominated performance alongside Ewan McGregor, Samuel Joslin and Oaklee Pendergast, The Impossible was called “intense and compelling” by Salon.

Best movie new to BBC iPlayer this week

Women Talking: Jessie Buckley stars alongside the likes of Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Ben Whishaw and Frances McDormand in this 2022 drama.

Directed and written by Sarah Polley, who won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for her work bringing Miriam Toews’ novel to the screen, the film tells the story of a group of American Mennonite women who discuss their future after learning about the men’s history of raping women in their colony.

The film sits at a 90% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, and was called “compelling, gripping, powerful, as tense as a thriller” by The Spectator.

2001: A Space Odyssey: Dubbed “one of the most influential of all sci-fi films” by Rotten Tomatoes, 2001 comes from legendary director Stanley Kubrick, which he co-wrote with iconic writer Arthur C Clarke.

It follows a journey through space and time to investigate an alien monolith, though on board the mission’s spaceship, computer HAL begins to exhibit strange and sinister behaviour – becoming one of cinema’s greatest villains in the process.

The film also features many iconic moments, including a mesmerising vortex sequence, and stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester and Douglas Rain.

Journeyman: Released in 2017, this drama focuses on a champion boxer who enters his last big fight, though gets a serious head injury that has a profound impact on his life.

Directed, written by and starring Paddy Considine alongside Jodie Whittaker, Anthony Welsh and Paul Popplewell, Journeyman drew acclaim, earning an 85% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie was hailed as “a moving tale of love and conflict, told by two wonderful British actors” by Metro.
