Kay is believed to have been in her 60s when she sadly died and her daughter at the time paid tribute to George in honour of her mum as she described the star as “kind.”
In a letter given to Omega Auctions, she wrote: “My mother and George shared a strong, loving and enduring bond that began at the very start of his career.”
In 1999, George was asked to be the godfather to Kay’s daughter and he helped to host her parents’ wedding on Necker Island owned by Virgin owner Richard Branson.
In her letter she continued: “I have vivid memories — formed later through photographs — of George travelling with my parents, clambering into private jets, and setting off on adventures together.”
She added: “As a child, I ran around the house blissfully unaware of the global stardom surrounding me. To me, he was simply a familiar, kind presence in our lives.”
Considered to be one of the most sought after models of her time, Kay rubbed shoulders with others in the modelling world including Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford.
And it was because of her close friendship with the ladies that enabled George to use them in his music video for Freedom in 1990.
Speaking about the items that had been auctioned, Omega said: “These pieces tell a story of loyalty, trust and the man behind the icon.”
The Wham! star died at his home on Christmas Day in 2016. And within moments of hearing about his death, tributes started to pour in from his fans around the world.
And flowers and cards were also left outside his home in Goring-On Thames, where his body was found by his partner at the time, Fadi Fawaz.
In a statement Fadi said: “We were supposed to be going for Christmas lunch. I went round there to wake him up and he was just gone, lying peacefully in bed. We don’t know what happened yet. Everything had been very complicated recently, but George was looking forward to Christmas, and so was I.”
