In the words of Oprah Winfrey, so what is the truth? At the 2024 Governors Awards, John Mulaney claimed to have filmed a self-tape for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! “Ladies and gentlemen, you’re looking at me and you’re thinking ‘Oh, great. Another goddamn stand-up comedian here to make fun of us at our sacred rituals.’ Well I’ll have you know I’m not such an outsider,” he said during the show’s opening monologue. “I am quite sought after in the film world. I would like to share with you a real email that I got from my agents about 30 days ago.” He then read an email asking him to self-tape for “Young Cop” in an untitled Maggie Gyllenhaal project. We now know that project is The Bride! And Gyllenhaal says she never got that tape. ScreenRant asked the director herself. “No, I didn’t,” she replied. “And I would love to see his tape if he’d like to send it to me now.”
Mulaney’s bit did have an effect on The Bride! and the man formerly known as Young Cop. “I gave him a name after I watched that incredible fucking super funny thing that John Mulaney did,” Gyllenhaal said. “I named him Officer Goodman.” Louis Cancelmi of Sorry, Baby fame wound up getting the now-named part. “He’s brilliant,” Bride! star Jessie Buckley said. More like Sorry, Mulaney.
