EXCLUSIVE: Netflix‘s drama The 99’ers has added six to its cast of characters from the 1999 U.S. Women’s Soccer team: Julia McDermott (Women of the Movement), Shaunette Renée Wilson (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Perry Mattfeld (Chad Powers), Annabel O’Hagan (Fallout), Lizzy Greene (Ransom Canyon), and Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan).

McDermott will play defender Brandi Chastain, with Wilson as goalkeeper Briana Scurry, Mattfeld as forward/midfielder Michelle Akers, O’Hagan as ’99 World Cup team captain Carla Overbeck, Greene as midfielder Kristine Lilly, and Fuhrman as defender Joy Fawcett.

As we told you first, Zoey Deutch leads the film as trailblazing U.S. Women’s soccer executive Marla Messing, who oversaw the massively successful 1999 World Cup tournament that set attendance and TV viewership records. Emily Bader and Emilia Jones will play team members Mia Hamm and Julie Foudy, with Alessandro Nivoa as Head Coach Tony DiCicco.

Based on the 2000 HarperPerennial book The Girls of Summer: The U.S. Women’s Soccer Team and How It Changed the World by Jeré Longman, The 99’ers picks up with the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team in 1999, as they defy the odds to emerge victorious in a dramatic penalty kick shootout against China in the World Cup final, under the scorching summer sun and in a stadium filled with 93,000 fans. This monumental win captivated millions worldwide and forever altered the course of women’s sports.

Nicole Kassell is directing from a script by Katie Lovejoy, Dana Stevens, and Peter Hedges. Jill Mazursky and Jamee Decio were the first writers on the project. Liza Chasin is producing for 3Dot Productions, under the company’s deal with the streamer, alongside Hayley Stool and Ross Greenburg, with Marla Messing, Jill Mazursky, and Krista Smith exec producing.
