Friendship breakups can be just as (or even more) messy and heartbreaking as romantic breakups, and celebrities are not immune. Here are some high-profile celeb friendships that fell apart in front of the world…

Gwyneth Paltrow and Winona Ryder were the IT besties of the ’90s, becoming as much a package deal as the guys they were dating — Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Their friendship seemed to fall apart in the late ’90s. Rumors at the time suggested that it was because Winona had been interested in the Viola role in Shakespeare in Love, and that Gwyneth allegedly stole the script from her coffee table, then stole the part and won an Oscar. The recent biography Gwyneth by Amy Odell suggests Gwyneth believes Winona planted the story of her stealing the script in the press, prompting her to give her the nickname “Vagina Rider.”

Gwyneth and Winona have both stayed pretty silent about their friendship ending, although in 2009 Gwyneth did write about a former “frenemy” in a Goop post that many speculated was Winona: “Back in the day, I had a ‘frenemy’ who, as it turned out, was pretty hell-bent on taking me down,” Gwyneth wrote. “This person really did what they could to hurt me… one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and happiness.”

Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag’s friendship was a central storyline on The Hills — from them moving in together in Season 1 to the friendship crumbling and turning adversarial in later seasons. The conflict initially arose when Heidi started dating Spencer Pratt, whom she would go on to marry, and whom Lauren didn’t like. Heidi seemingly chose Spencer over Lauren and moved in with him. Meanwhile, Spencer leaked a story to the media that Lauren had made a sex tape with her ex, Jason Wahler — a move that effectively ended Lauren and Heidi’s friendship once and for all.

Lauren later claimed MTV forced her to attend Heidi and Spencer’s wedding in 2008 — even locking her in the basement so she couldn’t leave. It seems the pair still aren’t on speaking terms to this day.

3. Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie grew up together, but things turned not-so-simple when they became hugely famous as a duo in their reality show The Simple Life in 2003. It didn’t take long before rumors spread that the pair were fighting, with speculation that Nicole was jealous of Paris’ higher profile. In 2005 Paris released a statement that said, “It’s no big secret that Nicole and I are no longer friends. Nicole knows what she did, and that’s all I’m ever going to say about it.”

During a Today appearance the same year, Nicole said the pair “just grew apart” and that it had become “a much bigger thing than it is.” The next season of The Simple Life saw the pair largely film separately.

While their fight was messy, by 2007, they had reconciled, with Paris saying, “There was no reason why we were fighting; it was just silly. We believed what other people were saying. … People are really two-faced in this town, and they were trying to play us against each other. It made me sadder than any breakup with a boyfriend. It was just like the worst feeling ever.”

Paris retold this story on Call Her Daddy in 2024, when she and Nicole appeared to promote their new show, Paris & Nicole: The Encore. “It was mostly the media spinning things and creating drama that didn’t exist,” she said

“It’s that combined with — we were in our 20s, we were just so young that we didn’t even know how to communicate with each other,” Nicole added. “It makes me sad to think about a time without my friend.”

4. Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian

Another Paris friendship that seemed to suffer in the toxic celeb culture of the 2000s was her relationship with Kim Kardashian. Like Nicole, Paris had been friends with Kim since childhood, and Kim’s first brush with fame was when she worked as Paris’s closet organizer and appeared on The Simple Life, assisting the heiress.

But their friendship seemed to wane when the power dynamics shifted as Paris was no longer the It celebrity — and Kim suddenly was, thanks to the launch of her own reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians in 2007.

In 2008, Paris made some unkind comments about Kim, saying her butt was “gross” and like “cottage cheese inside a trash bag” (gotta love those unhinged body standards of the ’00s). Although Paris did apologize, her friendship with Kim seemed well and truly over.

In 2011, Kim said, “We don’t really talk. … There comes a point in life where you just grow apart and realize you’re not as similar as you thought.”

The two apparently reconnected in 2016 at Kris Jenner’s Christmas Party and have been seen together since, seemingly friends once again.

5. Seth Rogen and James Franco

Seth Rogen and James Franco were not just friends but frequent collaborators, beginning with Freaks and Geeks and then on to movies like Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, This Is the End, and The Disaster Artist. But in 2018, both their working partnership and their friendship came to a halt when James Franco was accused by five women — four of whom were his acting students — of “inappropriate” and “sexually exploitative” behavior, which was followed by further allegations from other women (he’d also previously admitted to “chatting up” a 17-year-old when was 35).

Franco denied the lawsuit’s allegations but later did admit to sleeping with students at his now-defunct acting school (who were not involved in the case), calling it “wrong.”

The 2018 allegations against James marked the end of his friendship with Seth, despite Seth initially saying he’d continue working with James. In 2021, Seth addressed the matter, saying, “What I can say is that I despise abuse and harassment and I would never cover or conceal the actions of someone doing it, or knowingly put someone in a situation where they were around someone like that.”

He added, “I look back to that interview in 2018 where I comment that I would keep working with James, and the truth is that I have not and I do not plan to right now. … It has changed many things in our relationship and our dynamic.”

In 2024, James confirmed the pair were no longer in touch, telling Variety, “I haven’t talked to Seth. I love Seth, we had 20 great years together, but I guess it’s over. And not for lack of trying. I’ve told him how much he’s meant to me.”

6. Katy Perry and Rihanna

Katy Perry and Rihanna met in 2009 and soon became best friends, even vacationing together the same year. In 2010, Rihanna threw a bachelorette party for Katy ahead of her marriage to Russell Brand, but missed the wedding because of work commitments. She said Katy understood, and it seems Rihanna was there to support Katy when she divorced Russell Brand in 2012.

Their friendship appeared to become strained when Rihanna briefly got back together with Chris Brown in late 2012, and Katy didn’t approve. By 2013, Katy allegedly refused to sit next to Rihanna at the Grammys.

In 2014, they both attended a party for Major Lazer and seemed to be getting along, and by 2015, they were besties again.

It’s unclear why, but by 2018 their friendship seemed to be on the rocks again. Although they posed together at the Met Gala, there were reports that they were “forced” to do so, and Rihanna — who was hosting that year — apparently excluded Katy from the afterparty. The pair haven’t been seen together since, and presumably aren’t friends anymore, although neither has officially commented on it.

7. Jay-Z and Kanye West

Jay-Z signed Kanye to his label Roc-A-Fella records early in his career, and the two seemed close for many years. In 2011, they released a joint album, Watch the Throne, and then toured together, but rumors began to spread that they were barely talking due to disagreements while preparing for the tour.

In 2014, Jay and Beyoncé famously did not attend Kanye’s wedding to Kim Kardashian, although Beyoncé did congratulate them on Instagram. Kanye later said he was “hurt” by their absence.

Still, when Jay launched TIDAL in 2015, Kanye was there to endorse and support it. But during a performance in 2016, Kanye publicly called out Jay for not checking on him and his family after Kim was robbed in Paris, saying there would never be a Watch The Throne II and that “our kids ain’t never even played together.”

Jay seemed to reference his beef with Kanye on his 2017 album 4:44, rapping, “But you got hurt because you did cool by ‘Ye / You gave him 20 million without blinkin’ / He gave you 20 minutes on stage, f–k was he thinkin’?” Kanye then claimed TIDAL owed him $3 million.

In 2017, Jay described his relationship with Kanye as “complicated,” saying there was “genuine love there” but that things had happened that were “not really acceptable.”

The following years saw Kanye’s mental health struggles and his public persona becoming more and more troubled. Amongst many offensive things he said on social media, Kanye posted an attack on Jay and Beyoncé’s youngest two kids seemingly out of nowhere before deleting the post and later saying he felt “bad” and that he “felt like the black sheep” of the family, suggesting that Jay and Beyoncé weren’t there when he “needed them.”

In January 2026, Kanye took out an ad in the Wall Street Journal apologizing at length “to those I’ve hurt,” which presumably includes Jay-Z (amongst many others), but there haven’t been any signs of a friendship renewal yet.

8. Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson

Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson were very close during their time in One Direction, but Louis has said he was “absolutely crushed” when Zayn left the band in 2015, particularly because Zayn hadn’t confided in him about his wish to exit. “I thought that we had a relationship where he could have had that conversation with me,” Louis said. Later in 2015, the pair got into a snarky Twitter exchange and it was clear they were not getting on.

In 2016, after the birth of Louis’ son Freddie, Zayn said in an interview that he wished Louis luck but that the pair were “not talking on friend terms.” Later that year, when Louis’ mother Johannah Deakin died, Louis performed a tribute to her on The X Factor, with his former One Direction bandmates in the audience as support — except Zayn, who was a no show, something that deeply hurt Louis, especially after one of his mother’s dying wishes was that he and Zayn would reconcile.

In 2017, Zayn said he and Louis were “civil”, but in 2018, Zayn released a song, “Good Years,” which many thought was about his struggles in One Direction, and within hours, Louis cryptically tweeted, “Proper confused. What a hypocrite!”

Their friendship seemed to be over for good. But when bandmate Liam Payne suddenly died in 2024, the remaining members of One Direction — including Zayn — released a joint statement and attended his funeral together. The tragedy seemed to finally bring Zayn and Louis together again, with Louis attending Zayn’s concert in January 2025 and Zayn following him on Instagram a few months later. Then there was even better news for fans: Zayn and Louis were filming a Netflix road trip special together, which would follow their travels and attempts to reconnect.

Unfortunately, there have been recent rumors that the pair are fighting once again, and even allegations that they had a “physical altercation.” Of course, this is unsubstantiated gossip at this point, and only time will tell how it all pans out.

9. Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato

Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato had been friends since they both starred on Barney and Friends as kids, and grew up together in the Disney Channel universe, even starring together in Princess Protection Program in 2009. By the following year, cracks were showing in their friendship. When a fan asked Demi in 2010 how Selena was, Demi replied, “Ask Taylor,” referring to Selena’s growing friendship with Taylor Swift. Later that year, Demi also said of Selena, “We’re both busy, and I wish the best for her,” adding, “true friends don’t let their friends or family be mean to you.”

By 2013, the pair seemed to have reconciled, with Demi sharing they had become closer again after she entered rehab and Selena called her. In 2014, Selena said she regretted not being there for Demi when she was struggling.

But it wasn’t long before things became shaky again — later in 2014, Demi unfollowed Selena on Twitter, and said, “I think it’s just one of those things where people change and grow apart.”

The next year, they appeared to have made up once again, but in 2018 they unfollowed each other on Instagram. In 2020, Demi said she and Selena were “not friends” anymore.

10. Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss

Taylor and Karlie were once so close that some fans speculated they were actually secretly dating. They seem to have met around 2013 and in subsequent years were frequently seen attending events, chilling out, and vacationing together.

In October 2016, they were photographed on a night out with Serena Williams and Dakota Johnson in one of their last notable public interactions. Karlie posted an enthusiastic birthday message to Taylor on Instagram that December, but there seemed to be no interaction between the pair in the next year. Karlie did wish Taylor happy birthday in December 2017, but it didn’t put an end to speculation about what had gone down between the two.

In March 2018, Karlie told The New York Times, “Don’t believe everything you read,” and later that year she attended Taylor’s Reputation tour, posting about how “proud” she was and later telling Vogue that the pair were still “really good friends.”

But when Karlie married Joshua Kushner in 2018 and held another wedding in 2019, Taylor attended neither due to “prior commitments” — although Scooter Braun did attend the 2019 event and later was seen hanging out with Karlie not long after he had purchased Taylor’s masters.

In 2023, Karlie attended the Eras tour but wasn’t seated in the VIP section like other celeb attendees, fueling further speculation about a rift.

Taylor, meanwhile, has never commented about what happened with Karlie or if they’re still friends, but many fans, of course, believe some of her lyrics allude to the end of their relationship.

11. Lena Dunham and Lorde

Both Lena Dunham and Lorde (real name Ella) were part of Taylor Swift’s “squad” in the 2010s and became close as well, with Lorde even living with Lena and her then-boyfriend (and Lorde’s collaborator) Jack Antonoff for a while.

Their friendship seemed to end around the same time Lena broke up with Jack in 2017, causing many to speculate it was because Jack had had an affair with Lorde (one fan even produced an infamous 29-page PowerPoint presentation about it). Jack dismissed the rumors as “dumb heteronormative gossip,” and Lorde also said, “Jack and I are not dating.”

Lena, meanwhile, said, “I don’t think anything happened between them. I can never know someone else’s life. I have never spoken to Ella about it. We haven’t talked since Jack and I broke up. It was awful, and I couldn’t do anything about it except trust that what he was saying to me was true.”

12. Elizabeth Taylor and Debbie Reynolds

This one is old-school but wild — Elizabeth Taylor and Debbie Reynolds were best friends for years, having connected during school classes on the MGM lot while both were contracted to the studio as teenagers. Debbie married Eddie Fisher in 1955, and when Elizabeth married Mike Todd in 1957, Debbie was her matron of honor, and Eddie was Mike’s best man. The couples were neighbors and an iconic unit of four. When Mike died in a plane crash in 1958, Eddie apparently comforted Elizabeth a little too well, and the pair began sleeping together. “I was the last to find out about the affair,” Debbie said in 2010, adding, “It left me shattered.”

Debbie and Elizabeth stopped speaking and Debbie and Eddie divorced, with Debbie left to raise her two kids Carrie (yes, the Carrie Fisher) and Todd as a single mother. Eddie and Elizabeth married in 1959, but Elizabeth left Eddie for Richard Burton in 1965.

The following year, Debbie and her new husband, Harry Karl, wound up on the same ocean liner as Elizabeth and Richard on a journey to London. Debbie and Elizabeth exchanged notes and decided to have dinner to “get this over with,” but according to Debbie, they had a “wonderful evening.” She later said Eddie was the “selfish one” in the whole affair, and joked, “If your husband’s going to leave you for anyone, it might as well be Elizabeth Taylor.”

In the end, Debbie and Elizabeth remained friends until Elizabeth’s death in 2011, with Debbie sharing a bit of one of their last conversations: “I said, ‘Getting old is really shit.’ And she said, ‘It certainly is. It certainly is, Debbie.'”
