In “The Place Beyond the Pines,” the “Barbie” star reunites with “Blue Valentine” director Derek Cianfrance for an emotional crime drama set spanning 15 years. Gosling plays Luke Glanton, a brooding motorcycle stuntman with a traveling carnival. When he reconnects with a former lover (Eva Mendes), he discovers he has a child he never knew about. Determined to support his son and win back the life he feels he’s lost, Luke decides to start robbing banks to provide for his family, but the escalating crimes eventually bring him into conflict with an ambitious police officer, Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper).
