James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and the TV series Pluribus and Andor were among the biggest winners Sunday at the 53rd annual Saturn Awards, which hosted a ceremony packed with A-listers from the world of genre film and TV.
Cameron, Tom Cruise and George Lucas were among the attendees and eventual winners/honorees during the show, which honored the year’s best in the fantasy, science fiction, horror, superhero and action-adventure genres via organizer the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.
Cameron, on hand with longtime producer Gale Anne Hurd to receive an award honoring the 40th anniversary of Aliens, won for Best Direction and Best Screenwriting (with Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver) for his third Avatar pic, which had a leading five wins on the night also picking up trophies for special effects, Younger Performer in a Film (Jack Champion) and Best Science Fiction Film.
Cruise, also on hand to bestow Mission: Impossible collaborator Christopher McQuarrie with the Visionary Award, won Best Actor for the franchise finale The Final Reckoning. The movie also won Best Action/Adventure Film.
Other top film honors went to Sinners (Best Thriller Film), Wicked: For Good (Best Fantasy Film), Frankenstein (Best Horror Film) and The Fantastic Four: First Steps (Best Cinematic Film Adaptation). Frankenstein also won for costumes, makeup and Supporting Actor (Jacob Elordi).
As for other honorary awards, Lucas was on hand to receive the Dr. Donald A. Reed Founder’s Award, which was introduced by surprise guest Mark Hamill. In addition, Star Trek was inducted into the Saturn Awards Hall with the help of William Shatner. Titus Welliver was presented with the Lance Reddick Legacy Award named after his former Bosch co-star.
In the TV categories Sunday at the ceremony hosted by Joel McHale at the Universal Hilton, Pluribus and Andor led the way with three wins apiece. Pluribus scored for Best New Genre Television Series, Best Actress (Rhea Seehorn) and Best Supporting Actress (Karolina Wydra), while Andor won for Best Science Fiction Television Series, Best Actor (Diego Luna) and Best Supporting Actor (Stellan Skarsgård).
