In the goldfish bowl of royal life, there are very few people whom those at the top can trust, and for King Charles and Prince William, the list is even shorter. Thankfully, though, the people they do have around him can be counted on for their dedication to duty, their tact and their iron-clad sense of discretion.

Speaking to the Daily Express, leading royal expert and author Robert Jobson made it clear exactly how vital Edward is to the Royal Family’s future.

Mr Jobson said: “As Andrew remains permanently out of the public eye, the King has increasingly turned to Prince Edward to shoulder the duties once shared among the younger generation of their era.

“In Edward, the King has found a trusted, steady hand—dependable and discreet—supported by his equally grounded wife, Sophie. Together, they present a wholesome, scandal-free image that has quietly bolstered the monarchy’s relatability in modern times.

“He has stepped up at a time when Charles and William need loyal, experienced support—and Edward delivers it without fuss. His decades of quiet service and his unblemished record have also positioned him as a valuable bridge between generations.”

Looking further ahead, Mr Jobson notes that Edward will also play a key role for his nephew, Prince William. “When William becomes King, Edward is likely to be a trusted confidant—someone he can bounce ideas off in private with a direct line to the wisdom and values of William’s grandparents, the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.”

While his early days in the Royal Family were rocked by various career changes as he quit the Royal Marines for a job in the theatre and later ran an unsuccessful production company, Prince Edward’s future is now firmly fixed as a senior royal.

As well as representing over 70 patronages, the Duke first took over the running of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme following his father’s retirement back in 2017 and continues to play a key role in its management both in the UK and across the Commonwealth.

Speaking about how close the King is with his younger brother, Editor-in-Chief of Majesty Magazine and author of Prince Edward: A Biography, Ingrid Seward said: “The King has always been fond of his young brother, who was far closer to their father than Charles could ever hope to be.

“Ed, as he was called, got along well with Philip, and they worked very successfully on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Scheme. Until Edward took over. Charles knew that he would be a trusty pair of hands, especially with Sophie at his side. She really is the secret weapon.”
