The Gist

Queen Elizabeth II, who died in 2022, is survived by three sons, one daughter, eight grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

King Charles III, who succeeded his mother Elizabeth, has two sons: Prince William, who is first in line to the throne, and Prince Harry, who is fifth after William’s children.

The youngest member of the British Royal family is Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi, born on January 22, 2025.

They may be one of the most famous—and most photographed—families in the world, but it can be hard to keep track of exactly who’s who when it comes to the British Royal clan. Between marriages and new arrivals, the Windsor family has grown substantially over the last two decades.

Even casual royal observers will know the late Queen Elizabeth II was England’s former monarch, reigning for a history-making 70 years. Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip, welcomed four children—including King Charles III, who ascended to the throne upon his mother’s death in 2022. But the royal family tree extends far beyond those who wear the crown.

The 25 individuals at the front of the line for the throne include Elizabeth’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her only niece, and more. Some faces may look familiar, as certain family members stepped into the public eye to assist in royal duties following King Charles and Princess Catherine’s cancer diagnoses in 2024. Others are more private, making rare appearances at major events like Charles’s 2023 coronation.

Whether they’re well-known to the general public or maintain a low profile, have blood ties or married into the monarchy, these are the past and current members of the modern British royal family tree.

Queen Elizabeth II was born on April 21, 1926, the eldest daughter to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, later known as The Queen Mother. She had one sibling: younger sister Princess Margaret (1930-2002).

Elizabeth had the longest tenure of any British monarch, as she succeeded the throne in 1952 at 25 years old, following the death of her father, and ruled until she passed away at 96 years old on Sept. 8, 2022. She married Prince Philip in 1947 and welcomed four children: Prince Charles (now King Charles III), Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.

Her Majesty was heavily involved in philanthropic efforts, with connections to more than 500 charities, including ones dedicated to furthering the opportunities of young people and preserving the environment. A public figure who wore bright clothing to stand out in crowds, she is said to have lived by the maxim, “I have to be seen to be believed,” in regards to her frequent appearances and engagements.

When she wasn’t attending to royal duties, Queen Elizabeth had a passionate interest in horses, per the royal family website, having gained a reputation as a rider, owner, and breeder. She was gifted her first pony, a Shetland named Peggy, by her grandfather, King George V. Elizabeth also had a love for dogs—having owned more than 30 Corgis in her lifetime.

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was born on June 10, 1921, on the Greek island of Corfu to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. He had four older sisters: Princess Margarita, Princess Theodora, Princess Cécile, and Princess Sophie. Philip served in the Royal Navy from January 1940 through the end of World War II.

In 1947, he became a British subject, renouncing his Greek and Danish royal title and taking his mother’s surname, Mountbatten. The same year, he married Queen Elizabeth II, whom he remained married to until his death on April 9, 2021. Per Britannica, he’d amassed over 22,000 solo appearances before retiring from public engagements in late 2017—making him one of the busiest members of the royal family.

King Charles III is the oldest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, born Nov. 14, 1948. He ascended the British throne following the death of his mother on Sept. 8, 2022, and was coronated a year later on May 6, 2023.

Charles married Princess Diana (formerly Lady Diana Spencer) in 1981, and together they welcomed sons Prince William in 1982 and Prince Harry in 1984. The couple separated in 1992 and officially divorced in 1996. Charles went on to marry Camilla Parker Bowles, now Queen Consort, in 2005.

Much like his mother, the monarch has a history of philanthropy. He has helped establish more than 20 charities over 40 years, including The Prince’s Trust, The Prince’s Foundation, and The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund (PWCF).

On Feb. 5, 2024, Buckingham Palace announced His Majesty was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer, which doctors identified while treating Charles for an enlarged prostate. In December 2025, Charles announced that his treatment had moved into a “precautionary phase,” with a reduced treatment schedule. Charles continues to make numerous public appearances. In early 2026 alone, he stepped out at London Fashion Week and at the year’s Commonwealth Day service.

Diana, Princess of Wales, was born Diana Frances Spencer on July 1, 1961 in Norfolk. She met Prince Charles through her sister, Lady Sarah, while working as a nursery teacher’s assistant. They were married from 1981 to 1996, having separated in 1992. Diana and Charles welcomed two children, sons Prince William and Prince Harry.

Often regarded as ‘the people’s princess,’ Spencer engaged in many public philanthropic causes—most notably advocating for AIDs research and causes addressing homelessness, cancer, and education access. She also became a fashion icon, setting trends with memorable looks like her famous ‘revenge dress.’

Diana was in a car accident in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997 and died shortly after, at the age of 36. Today, her sons continue to preserve her memory and further her legacy through their participation in humanitarian efforts and support of her former causes.

William attended the University of St. Andrews, where he met his now-wife, Kate Middleton, and graduated in 2005. After completing officer training, he joined the RAF Search and Rescue Force in 2010. The following year, on April 29, 2011, he and Kate got married. They have since welcomed three children: Prince George in 2013, Princess Charlotte in 2015, and Prince Louis in 2018.

In 2020, William started the Earthshot Prize, an award created “to discover, spotlight, and help grow innovative solutions that are working to repair and regenerate our planet,” per the official website. It is one of many philanthropic causes he presides over. He is also president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), often attending their annual awards ceremony with his wife.

Despite the time-consuming nature of their royal roles, William and Kate are committed to dropping off and picking up their kids from school, a former royal butler told InStyle in 2026.

Catherine, Princess of Wales, was born Catherine Elizabeth Middleton on Jan. 9, 1982, to Michael and Carole Middleton. She met Prince William at St. Andrews upon enrolling in 2001; they later married and welcomed three children.

Middleton has devoted much of her philanthropic efforts to early childhood support and children’s mental and physical health. In June 2021, she launched The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood and has since spearheaded the “Shaping Us” campaign, which underscores the importance of a child’s early years.

On March 22, 2024, the princess posted an emotional video to the official royal social media accounts announcing she has an undisclosed form of cancer. She noted at the time that she’d be undergoing a course of preventative chemotherapy. In January 2025, she announced that she was officially in remission.

Kate and her family live at their ‘forever home,’ Forest Lodge, a $21 million Georgian mansion which they moved into in late 2025.

Harry and Meghan stepped back from their roles as working royals in 2020 and moved to Montecito, California. In 2023, Harry released his memoir Spare, in which he opens up about his estranged relationship with the royal family.

The couple launched the non-profit organization The Archewell Foundation, which contributes to a variety of philanthropic causes, and media production company Archewell Productions in 2020. They’ve since made forays into television and film, while continuing to take humanitarian trips around the world.

They welcomed their first child, Prince Archie, in 2019 and their second, Princess Lilibet, in 2021.

After moving back to her home state of California, Meghan hosted a podcast called Archetypes—which ended in November 2022—in addition to contributing to The Archewell Foundation and Archewell Productions. Andrew married Sarah Ferguson in 1986 and the two welcomed two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, in 1988 and 1990, respectively, before divorcing in 1996.

In 2019, he was accused of sexual abuse by Virginia Giuffre, an accuser of Jeffrey Epstein, and was later sued. Andrew denied the allegations but was stripped of his military affiliations and royal patronages in 2022 after a settlement was reached.

In 2025 he was stripped of his remaining royal titles by his brother Charles, becoming Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. He remains eighth in the line of succession. Andrew was arrested in February 2026 on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He has since been released under investigation and has not been charged, denying any wrongdoing, the BBC reported.

In 2026 a royal commentator told GB News the former couple are no longer “the world’s most friendly divorced couple” as they both face scrutiny over their alleged communications with convicted sex offender Epstein.
