The royal family has been a source of fashion inspiration for countless years. From the iconic ensembles Princess Diana wore back in the day to the many times Kate Middleton has rocked casual, commoner style, the world loves looking to the British monarchy for style tips. Of course, one blond beauty in the royal family has been in the public eye for roughly 30 years and has had quite a few memorable fashion moments along the way. Yes, we’re talking about Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.
Born Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones, the Duchess of Edinburgh married Prince Edward, the youngest brother of King Charles, in 1999 after meeting him in 1993. Prior to joining the royal family, Sophie worked in public relations and brought the corpcore aesthetic into her work outfits, but once she became a royal, the opportunity arose for her to wear outfits that were more ornamental, including luxurious gowns with sparkling tiaras. Over the years, she’s managed to strike a balance between myriad aesthetics, dressing in elegant ballgowns to attend weddings or coronations and wearing chic outerwear to outdoor events. Overall, she’s seemed to redefine her fashion taste with each decade, becoming progressively bolder with her clothing. So, let’s take a look at her style transformation, from humble ’90s dressing to showing more skin over time.

Similar to the late Princess Diana, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, stayed on par with the popular fashions of the 1990s. For instance, her streetwear included varsity jackets, while her professional attire ranged from little black dresses to monochromatic suits with matching skirts and blazers. The duchess’ wardrobe and styling was understated and included a majority of neutral colors, perfectly in line with the modesty of the royal family.
In line with that, accessories were reserved to traditional pieces such as pearls or a festive wide-brimmed hat. Once she officially married into the monarchy, more opulent elements were added to her outfits. One of the first indications of these embellishments was when Prince Edward and Sophie announced their engagement to the public in 1999. The duchess wore a blazer that included playful beading around the collar and pockets to celebrate the occasion.
When the duchess married Prince Edward in June 1999, she walked down the aisle in a beautiful ivory A-line gown. The silk dress was covered with a top coat layer that had a V-neckline and included long sleeves that widened at the ends. The dress featured pearl and crystal beading throughout, and a dainty tiara held her long tulle veil in place. She accessorized with small pearl earrings and a statement necklace that included a single dark pendant. Talk about transitioning to truly royal style!

At the turn of the millennium, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, was getting used to being the newest official member of the British royal family. This led to a few blunders at first, like her inappropriate royal wedding outfit that Sophie, Duchess Of Edinburgh won’t live down, but she ultimately started to establish her own individual sense of fashion. One way she set herself apart was by dabbling in whimsical touches, such as vivid colors and artistic headpieces. It also became evident that the Duchess of Edinburgh took like a liking to the ceremonial British tradition of large headwear. Her choice of hats included tall structures and wide brims, complete with embellishments like bows and lace.
In the mid-2000s, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, appeared to embrace elegant evening wear by donning gowns rather than her typical power suits. She began to show off more of her feminine side with colorful dresses that included prominent shimmering effects. Before this, her outfit colors were often limited to neutrals or soft pastels, but she began increasingly using eye-catching tones, especially red, which she wore in the form of coats, suit jackets, and dresses. She gave birth to both of her children during this decade, but she kept her eclectic style present even when wearing maternity clothing.

The 2010s saw a spike in interest for women of the British monarchy thanks to Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle joining the family. While this put the older generation on the back burner, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, still maintained a tasteful sense of fashion with a bit of a modern twist. She began to wear shorter hemlines that, in decades past, may have been considered controversial or risqué but looked stunning on her. For instance, her pairing of graceful gowns with appropriate headwear felt balanced against the short skirts that showed off her long legs. Moreover, no longer were floor-length gowns the norm for the duchess. She often attended annual events or even church services in midi dresses that cut off at her knees.
During this period, Sophie stayed loyal to proper dress silhouettes but dabbled in features that presented softness. This was perhaps a way to make the royal family appear relatable to the public, but in any case, she looked fantastic. Lighter colors and delicate fabrics like lace felt youthful on the duchess, and she also seemed to be embracing more slender silhouettes in the form of belted dresses and fitted skirts that hugged her waist. Furthermore, sheath dresses highlighted her lean figure and rarely strayed from a typical A-line construction.

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, is now in her 60s, and she’s the picturesque example of aging with grace. She’s also proof that dressing attractively doesn’t inherently stop once you hit a certain age. When it comes to important events, she’s increased her use of luxurious fabrics, like velvet, and favored outfits that include intricate beaded details. On the other hand, Sophie has gone a tad more casual and adaptable with her everyday fashion. Rather than princess gowns, she seems to be embracing two-pieces. These range from blouse-and-skirt combos to overcoats and trousers paired together.
While Sophie’s outfits nowadays aren’t informal by any means, they seem more relaxed. To accompany them, her hair is often back in a simple ponytail to show that she’s a practical beauty who values functional dressing. She seems to enjoy wearing detailed florals and oversized sleeves that add a subtle hint of dramatic flare to her ensembles. Still, she does sometimes drift into bohemian styles that are comfortable and earthy, like long, brown skirts worn with boots. The duchess has also embraced long, floor-length coats that are chic, tactile, and versatile for nearly every environment.
