Author Tom Bowers released his latest book, Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, today. The work focuses on the split and ongoing feud between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Royal Family.

Prince Harry, 41, and Meghan Markle, 44, stepped down from royal duties in early 2020, with the couple soon moving to the US with their young son. Behind their clearfully polished image in the public eye, the Revenge author delves into the what appears to be “downward spiral of decline” of Meghan and Harry.

Here, The Express looks at seven of the biggest bombshells uncovered in the latest royal book.

Meghan wanted to be ‘treated as God’

During the couple’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan shared how she was not told by officials what she should expect upon marrying into the Royal Family. In his memoir, which was released in 2023, Harry wrote how his wife “wasn’t given one minute of training”. However, in his latest book, Mr Bowers claimed Queen Elizabeth II instructed that Meghan was given appropriate training for her role as a senior royal. One official told the author that Meghan refused to grasp that “the Royal Family is the nation’s family and a national obsession” and that “the royals may appear to be ordinary people but to maintain the monarchy, they relied on the public’s willingness to treat them like God”. Noting that Meghan allegedly ignored all advice, the source added that she “thought she should be treated as God”.

Before the move to the US six years ago, Prince William and Princess Catherine’s tense relationship with Harry and Meghan was seemingly beginning to show. Prior to the couple’s wedding in 2018, William reportedly warned Harry that the relationship was going too fast. William and Catherine were said to be concerned that Meghan “lamented Harry’s unlikely chance of one day being king, just as she regretted the possibility that she would never be queen”. Shortly after the Sussexes returned from their honeymoon in 2018, relations purportedly broke down during a tense meeting which ended in Meghan allegedly snapping at William: “If you don’t mind, get your finger out of my face.”
