While we impatiently wait for some of the most anticipated upcoming movies to release, what better way to pass the time than with some good ol’ theory-crafting?

Fans are nothing if not imaginative, often cooking up absolutely bonkers theories for soon-to-release films – theories which just might be crazy enough to be true.

And even if not, it’s always a whole ton of fun hearing out the creatively off-the-wall predictions for new movies, all the more so if they end up being way more clever and inventive than what we actually end up with.

These 20 hugely anticipated upcoming movies, then, have all sparked some truly weird and maybe even downright WTF fan theories which have taken hold among certain pockets of their fandoms.

Whether informed by apparent leaks or cooked up entirely out of nowhere with plenty of wishful thinking, these fan theories all provide some fascinating food for thought as these films get closer to release.

It’ll be impossible to watch these movies without the wild theories in mind, and it’ll be fascinating to see if any of them actually end up panning out…

We know precious little about Shrek 5 so far, though considering that Zendaya has been cast as one of the ogre’s daughters, it’s fair to assume that much of the plot will revolve around parenthood and Shrek getting up there in age.

But last year, prominent leaker MyTimeToShineHello claimed that the film will feature a subplot where Shrek and the rest of the gang are transported into the “real world,” where they cross paths with the first film’s iconic villain Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow), who is now running a Shrek-themed amusement park.

This is one of those bonkers suggestions that’s so wild it just might be true. It really comes down to what the real world would mean in the context of a Shrek movie – would it remain animated or take a bold dive into live-action?

An animated version of our own reality in its own distinct visual style is clearly the safer and easier of the two to pull off, though it clearly still runs the risk of jumping the shark.
