We’ve all had embarrassing moments in our lives, like tripping over dog muck in new trainers and crying, or being shushed by someone at 35 in a theatre for crying while watching Interstellar. These things definitely didn’t happen to me, but movie stars have it even worse, because when they have embarrassing moments, they tend to be in front of a lot of people, as Reese Witherspoon will tell you.

Now if ever there were a star who genuinely had the ability to dry her tears with literal pound notes (or probably dollars thinking about it) that would be Witherspoon, because not only has she made a mint from uber-popular comedies like Sweet Home Alabama and Legally Blonde, she has also managed to translate that fame into a production company, a book club, a retail brand and a brand ambassadorship that has boosted her net worth to a scarcely believable $440million, meaning she’s probably not going to let the occasional embarrassing moment worry her too unduly.

Although perhaps that’s not actually the case, because she does have a toe-curling moment in her closet, which actually happened on these shores some years ago, as she related to People magazine.

“It literally haunts me. So this friend of mine, who I didn’t really know that well, but she was a very serious, proper actress, she asked me to give her an award. But I had never been to this award ceremony, so I thought it was like a roast. So I got up, and I roasted her,” she recalled.

It turned out this was not the case at all, and instead Witherspoon’s former friend reacted to being roasted at what was actually according to the actor a “classy” and “elegant” event by giving her the cold shoulder for good.

She added, “We’re not friends anymore. I’m not even kidding. We’re not friends anymore. I think she doesn’t like me anymore. I thought it was so funny, and it was just, I had the wrong audience. It was pretty bad.”

As we’ve discussed, it didn’t seem to do Witherspoon’s career any harm, if anything over the last decade or so things have got even more impressive for her compared to her early 2000s heyday, with an Oscar win in 2015 for Wild and considerable acclaim for her TV roles, chief among which was her work alongside Nicole Kidman on HBO’s Big Little Lies.

She was then nominated for a Golden Globe for The Morning Show on Apple TV with other luminaries including Jennifer Aniston, and while she’s going to be appearing in more of both of those shows, fans of the actor will probably be most excited about the fact there’s a Legally Blonde 3 on the way with Witherspoon ready to slip back into a pair of pink heels and play Elle Woods again, 23 years after the first sequel.

Before that, though, we’ll get Elle, a Prime Video prequel series in which the character will be played by newcomer Lexi Minetree, due to hit the streaming service in July.
