Prince William and Kate Middleton have had a busy month of March.
From the Nigerian state visit to the Commonwealth Day service to St. Patrick’s Day and the history-making installation of the first female Archbishop of Canterbury, the Prince and Princess of Wales’ calendars have been full.
That said, the public likely won’t see much of them until late April, and the reason why makes sense for the couple.
March was a busy month for Prince William and Kate Middleton. Together, they took part in the Nigerian state visit, the installation of the first female Archbishop of Canterbury, the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, and a day of engagements in London. The Princess of Wales also marked St. Patrick’s Day publicly, and earlier in the month visited Leicester, while the Prince of Wales also undertook solo engagements, including a visit to soldiers in the Mercian Regiment and a visit to Cornwall.

For much of April, though, the royal couple are likely set to scale back on public duties. The reason why is simple, and in keeping with their values—their kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis went on break from school on March 27 and won’t head back to classes until April 22. When the kids are away from school, William and Kate are typically away from public duty, as they sync their calendars up to be able to spend time with their kids.

Sometimes the Wales family of five turns up at the royal family Easter service in Windsor, and sometimes—like last year—they opt to remain at their country home, Anmer Hall, on the Sandringham estate. With Easter one week away on April 5, it remains to be seen whether the family will celebrate privately, or appear publicly with other members of the royal family.
Regardless whether they appear for Easter or not, royal followers should likely brace themselves for a few weeks without the Prince and Princess of Wales. In addition to retreating to Anmer Hall—a beloved place of refuge for the family—the family also sometimes goes on private family holidays during their kids’ Easter break, like last year when they went skiing in the French Alps. But, as Kate said during a 2020 appearance on the “Happy Mum, Happy Baby” podcast, her favorite times with her husband and kids are “outside in the countryside and we’re all filthy dirty.”

“Someone did ask me the other day, what would you want your children to remember about their childhood?” Kate continued. “And I thought that was a really good question, because actually, if you really think about that, is it that I’m sitting down trying to do their maths and spelling homework over the weekend? Or is it the fact that we’ve gone out and lit a bonfire and sat around trying to cook sausages that hasn’t worked because it’s too wet?”
William and Kate taking time away from royal duty and prioritizing their kids is a break from tradition—but one that’s paying off. “Those children look pretty happy with life,” a palace source previously told People. “A lot of it is the stabilizing normality Kate brings—and that’s how she grew up. William absolutely loves it.”

Though George, Charlotte, and Louis are growing up in the public eye, William and Kate’s aim is to give them as normal a childhood as possible—something a palace insider previously told People was a “massive balancing act.”
“Royal families over the generations haven’t had the chance to get those foundations right, but they have,” a friend told the outlet.
