Fleetwood Mac legend Lindsey Buckingham has been ‘attacked unknown substance’ during an unprovoked assault in California.

The 76-year-old musical icon was set upon on Wednesday close to Santa Monica Beach, California, according to police reports.

According to US outlet NBC4 Investigates, the musician was targeted by what it called a “stalking suspect”.

Buckingham is not thought to have been injured in the attack, with the suspect remaining at large.

However, it’s believed police have identified the individual and both the Los Angeles Police Department and the Santa Monica Police Department are poised to make an arrest.

According to reports, the female suspect ascertained the time and location of Buckingham’s appointment, before turning up at the location on Wednesday.

The star has been targeted by a stalker in the past, with a US judge extending a previous temporary restraining order against a woman known as ‘Michelle’.

The extension afforded Buckingham a further five years of protection from the stalker, according to outlet Touch.

There is no indication that this latest incident involved the same suspect.

Buckingham was born and raised in California’s Bay Area in 1949 and currently resides in the US state.

The guitarist joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975, when his much-publicised relationship with Stevie Nicks began, shortly before she was recruited to the band.

Known for groundbreaking albums including the iconic Rumours album, the group went on to become one of the best-loved rock’n”roll bands in music history.

Buckingham and Nicks ended their romance in 1976, with the split exposed in such tracks as Silver Springs – contained in Rumours.

The couple’s relationship breakdown eventually led to his explosive departure from the group in 1987.

The band later re-united for a string of world tours, with Buckingham later departing the group in 2018.

Since his departure, the star has kept a low profile.

Buckingham’s representatives have been contacted by LBC for comment.
