An Emmerdale star is set to return to the soap just months after saying an emotional goodbye, as his character narrowly escaped the villainous John Sugden’s clutches.

Chris Coghill will reprise the role of Kev Townsend later this year. Kev will return to Emmerdale to set up a new coffee shop and his return is sure to cause trouble for the locals, particularly his ex husband Robert, played by Ryan Hawley.

Robert is one half of the popular couple RobRon, with Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller). However, he ended up married to Kev during his prison stint, as he believed Kev was dying. But that was just a lie Kev told to save their relationship. The two became estranged, until Kev turned up in the village to reek havoc on Robert and Aaron.

Now, Kev has gone and RobRon have found their way back to each other, after dealing with a Robert’s prison stint, his serial killer brother John (Oliver Farnworth) and even being held hostage by a sword-wielding Kev. But how will the couple react when Robert’s former husband comes back?

Kev was last seen on Emmerdale at the beginning of this year, narrowly escaping John, who planned to Aaron. After alerting Aaron to the danger John posed, Kev fled the village, leaving behind his son Lewis Barton (Bradley Riches), who was still unaware that Kev was his dad.

Speaking about his exit, Chris wrote an emotional goodbye on Instagram. He penned: “Right. In a bit Emmerdale. Been an absolute joy. Thanks for all the love for Kev”, followed by “#kevout”.

Fans were not happy by his exit, writing: “Please come back Chris. Kev was the best thing to happen in Emmerdale for years. Complete nutcase, but bloody hilarious xx.”

“You turned Kev from an unlikable character into a fan favourite. If you ever get the opportunity to come back, please do it for the viewers who love you,” another fan chimed in.

Bradley Riches, who plays Chris’ onscreen son Lewis, also joined the conversation, and said: “Miss you dad xx”. Meanwhile, Danny Miller was seemingly determined to make sure Chris came back: “I’m gonna start a petition.”

Chris’ fans and colleagues got their wish, as he will return. Speaking about his comeback, the actor said: “I’m really pleased to be returning to Emmerdale, I had a brilliant time last year.

“Kev is a complex character that I love playing. He has psychopathic tendencies but also an energy and vulnerability that I think makes him pretty unique. I’m properly looking forward to getting back at it.”

Emmerdale’s producer Laura Shaw added: “Both Chris and the character of Kev made a massive impact on the show last year, so Chris is most definitely back by popular demand. With Kev’s son, Lewis, in the village still unaware of who his father is, it’s safe to say that there’s a lot of unfinished business and drama ahead.”
