King Charles III and Queen Camilla will be visiting the US for an official state visit. This marks the British royals’ first state visit since 2007, when Queen Elizabeth completed her fourth state visit to the country. Her previous visits took place in 1957, 1976, and 1991.

The news was shared by Mike Johnson, the US House Speaker, who shared a statement on X. “It is my distinct honor and great privilege to invite His Majesty King Charles III, The King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to address a Joint Meeting of Congress. Our two nations share one of the most consequential partnerships in history, and together we will mark the historic milestone of America’s 250th year of independence,” reads his post.
Buckingham Palace addressed the news in a statement of its own. “On advice of His Majesty’s Government, and at the invitation of The President of the United States, The King and Queen will undertake a State Visit to the United States of America,” it reads.

“Their Majesties’ programme will celebrate the historic connections and the modern bilateral relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States, marking the 250th anniversary of American Independence.”
“The King will then continue to Bermuda to undertake His Majesty’s first Royal Visit as Monarch to a British Overseas Territory.”
The visit will take place at the end of the month, on April 27th, concluding on the 30th. The King’s itinerary includes speaking to different US lawmakers and attending a banquet in the White House.
Rising tensions between Britain and the US

While relationships between the UK and the US began well at the start of Donald Trump’s presidency, with him and Melania Trump completing their second state visit last year, tensions have risen between the two nations in recent months. The governments have had their disagreements due to the developing war in Iran, with Trump criticizing Prime Minister Kier Starmer’s reluctance to join the war efforts.
Still, it’s expected that Trump and the King will have a positive interaction. “I look forward to spending time with the King, whom I greatly respect,” wrote Trump in a post shared on Truth Social. “It will be TERRIFIC!”
