Though Maul: Shadow Lord debuts next week, we haven’t been told much about the enemies Maul will be facing in the series. Captain Lawson and his side-kick Two Boots are just beginning to be explored in the Shadow of Maul tie-in comic, and we’ve seen the inquisitor Eighth Brother — AKA. Marrok — as an undead servant for Morgan Elsbeth in Ahsoka, but not much else.

Well, the creators of the animated series — supervising director Brad Rau, writer Matt Michnovetz and executive producer Athena Yvette Portillo — told GamesRadar a bit more about what we can expect from Marrok in Shadow Lord.

Maul clashes lightsabers with Marrok

Rau mentioned that the character is “a foil for Maul” and explained that they wanted the inquisitors in Maul: Shadow Lord to be as horrifying as possible, so Marrok moves both like a hulking monster and a ghost:

“I mean, he’s awesome. He’s so cool, and performed by our buddy, A.J. LoCascio, and A.J. is so good.

“We talked a lot about [how] we wanted these Inquisitors to be as creepy as possible, creepier than we’ve ever seen them: horrifying, in fact. And, A.J. certainly gives us a lot of that in his performance. And the way that we blocked Marrok in particular, if you notice, he moves really slowly, like a horror monster, and then he moves really fast, also like some kind of apparition. And so we just played with all of that fun stuff. It’s just too much fun.”

Michnovetz added that “he fits perfectly with the story we wanted to tell,” while Portillo adds that “it’s the level of threat and intimidation he brings to the table”.

We’ll get to spend much more time with Marrok when Maul: Shadow Lord debuts next week on April 6. Perhaps this will tell us how he died and ended up undead in service to Morgan? We’ll have to wait and see.
