When Fox’s first X-Men movie opened in 2000, it introduced mutants as a big-screen concept that leaned on a few core team dynamics, helping the team feel like a real, messy unit, especially the friction between Scott Summers and Logan. Cyclops had the buttoned-up leadership energy, Wolverine had the gritty outsider instinct, and their constant push-and-pull became one of the franchise’s easiest crowd-pleasers across movies, comics, and animation.
That is definitely part of why the Avengers: Doomsday casting news has had fans excited as familiar faces started getting confirmed. As of now, Cyclops is confirmed to be back in the mix, played again by James Marsden, but Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has not been officially announced for this one. Furthermore, Cyclops also wasn’t a part of Deadpool & Wolverine (which Jackman did return for), which means the pair have not had a chance to bounce off each other in this current multiverse stretch.
Marsden addressed that exact point when speaking with ComicBook, and he did it in the most Marvel-friendly way possible.

James Marsden on the Cyclops and Wolverine Dynamic
“I love Hugh Jackman, and I love the dynamic between Wolverine and Cyclops,” Marsden revealed. “It was always a brotherly, healthy competition between the two of them, where they were annoyed with each other. It did feel like a brotherly relationship. I wouldn’t say that I was excited to slide into that role without him barking in my ear. He was missed. I’m trying to… answer, without saying too much… Yeah, that’s my answer.”
So, what do we know about Avengers: Doomsday so far? Marvel is keeping the story details tight, and even basic plot specifics are still under wraps. What is confirmed is the scale and the lineup. Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, with Robert Downey Jr. starring as Doctor Doom.
Marsden will not be the only Fox-era mutant in the room. The announced returning X-Men names include Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and Kelsey Grammer as Beast, with Channing Tatum reprising his brief (and recent) stint as Gambit. Will more familiar X-Men faces appear? Probably, but we’ll just have to wait a bit longer to see if that includes Jackman’s Wolverine.
The Marvel Studios film Avengers: Doomsday is set for a theatrical release on December 18, 2026.
