You also might know that Joel got married to his partner John-Michael Sudsina at the end of 2025 — and in a recent interview with GQ, he revealed that the pair currently categorize their relationship as non-monogamous.

The subject came up after Joel was addressing body image issues in Hollywood and amongst gay men. “I would say I feel more pressure from being gay than I do from being an actor for sure,” he said. “Absolutely. 100%. I think the standards are slightly different. Listen, yes, Fire Island and Industry happened, but Nicholas and Dr. Park, I’m wearing clothes and the face card never declines. And so even if I’m playing an attractive character, it is less focused on my body.”

“But being gay and especially being in a non-monogamous relationship, and so primarily only interacting…I’m not looking for love outside my relationship,” he clarified. “We’re not polyamorous and so the *** I’m having outside of my relationship is all recreational at this point.”

“And so when you’re primarily navigating [as someone] not dating, but just hooking up, I think it becomes even more focused on solely what you look like, than the entire package of who you are.”

Joel went on to say that the issue of body image takes on different shades when it’s with other partners who aren’t his husband. “My husband loves me for a lot of reasons other than besides what I look like, and that’s great,” he explained. “But when I am hooking up with a rando, it is probably going to be mostly about what I look like. And because I sleep with men, men are much more…They’re much less forgiving about body ideals than anyone else, especially gay men.”
