By the end of 2026, Marvel fans will get the next big MCU event with Avengers: Doomsday, and a big part of the pitch is its massive (and ambitious) scale. In fact, the film was quickly confirmed to be pulling current MCU heroes into the same arena as characters who have mostly lived on the edges of canon so far, including familiar faces from the Fox X-Men era. Sure, we’ve already seen the MCU warm up to this kind of crossover in smaller doses, like Kelsey Grammer’s Beast showing up in The Marvels and a grab bag of legacy cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine that included Elektra, Johnny Storm, and Blade. Though the difference with Avengers: Doomsday is that it’s building those multiverse connections into the main event rather than limiting them to quick appearances.

One of the major returns here is Cyclops, with James Marsden finally stepping back into the role he played in Fox’s X-Men films. And as expected, Marvel secrecy is still very much the standard, so when Marsden recently spoke with ComicBook, he admitted he said yes before he had even seen the script. “It was a conversation,” Marsden revealed about how he was convinced to return for Avengers: Doomsday. “And in that conversation, we talked about what my involvement would be and everything, but I hadn’t actually read the script yet.” Obviously, the hype of a Marvel movie doesn’t require much, with the actor adding, “That was something like, yeah, sure, yes, of course.”

Avengers: Doomsday Official Cast and Release Date

Marsden also will not be the only Fox-era X-Men player in the mix. The currently announced returning lineup includes Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and Grammer as Beast, with Channing Tatum also returning as Gambit. On the broader MCU side, the ensemble is just as packed. Robert Downey Jr. is set to appear as Doctor Doom, and the already announced cast includes names like Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, and Tom Hiddleston, plus the latest Fantastic Four lineup with Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss Bachrach.

As of now, Marvel has Avengers: Doomsday dated for December 18, 2026, with a follow-up film (titled Avengers: Secret Wars) already planned for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
