Mubi has announced the UK and Ireland release date for the “hotly-anticipated” Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, the new horror film from acclaimed writer-director Jane Schoenbrun.

Starring Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder, the slasher film focuses on a famous fictional horror franchise. Following a slew of sequels, the series has been handed over to an enthusiastic young director, who hopes to reboot it for a new generation

She visits the star of the original film in the franchise, who has long since become a mysterious recluse, and the two fall into what the official synopsis describes as a “blood-soaked world of desire, fear and delirium”.

Scheduled for release in the US on 7 August, UK audiences will have to wait a little while longer for the film to be released, with Mubi confirming that it will hit the big screen a fortnight later on 21 August.

With the slasher being produced and distributed by Mubi, the film will likely hit the streamer following its theatrical release. It can be added as a channel to existing Prime Video subscriptions, and costs £11.99 per month following a seven-day free trial.

Similar to I Saw the TV Glow and Schoenbrun’s other film, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, this project is full of striking imagery and a neon colour palette, and also explores themes of queerness in horror.

Back in March 2024, the writer-director told Filmmaker Magazine that the upcoming film is “all about sex — essentially a film about learning to enjoy sex after transition”, adding that it was a “fun” film about “learning how to overcome sexual trauma”.

“Pre-transition, it wasn’t that I was asexual — I had plenty of desire — but having good sex in the wrong body was impossible. What was available was full dissociation, which is obviously a theme in the first two films,” they explained.

Anderson, best known for her role in The X-Files, will also be seen in Animals, the new crime thriller from Ben Affleck, later this year. Einbinder, meanwhile, will soon be featured in the fifth and final season of Hacks.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on 21 August.
