Serkis has created a fresh take on the book, which Orwell wrote in the mid-1940s as Stalinism had taken firm hold in post-revolution Soviet Union. The book told the tale of a group of farm animals who rebel against their owner with a plan to create a utopian, free and happy life for themselves. But one group — the pigs — end up taking over and the society becomes as shackled as it was before.
The subtitle of Serkis’ film, which was adapted by Nicholas Stoller: A Cautionary Tail.
