He’s just seven years old but the young Prince Louis has already broken royal protocol. This Easter Sunday, Louis stepped out in trousers, despite the long-standing tradition of young royal boys wearing shorts. The custom has been upheld for hundreds of years.

In attendance with his family, Louis joined the annual service at St George’s Chapel held at Windsor, on Sunday April 5.

But his outfit choice quickly became a talking point.

Even though the young royal looked smart in a navy suit, the key detail set him apart as it marks an important moment in his life as a royal.

Not in line with tradition, Louis’ fashion statement has been explained by etiquette expert William Hanson who previously said: “It’s a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts.” He added: “Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have in England.”
